Thyroid FNA and mesothelioma

Sorry for posting here. I've posted in chat and in cancer and not had a single reply so hoping to get some traffic here.

(Apologies, I know it's annoying)

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if any of you have been through a FNA.
Backstory, I'm in my 20s and have already had a serious cancer diagnosis (mesothelioma..) when I was 23. I'm currently NED, and incredibly lucky to get that far as mesothelioma is a bitch to treat. A long 8 hour surgery, copious amounts of chemo and an ICU stay, I've managed to make it this far. I have many complications due to this, 2 life long serious heart conditions and a digestive system that doesn't work a lot of the time.

Anyway I'm a few years on and I found a lump in my neck recently. Within 2 weeks I had bloods (thyroid check came back normal) had an ultrasound and also a camera down my nose / throat.
I have a 3cm lump, that's not fluid filled but there is fluid in the area IYSWIM, on my thyroid. I'm having FNA Monday (I'm shitting myself about that..) they've graded it at a 3. It's growing, slowly and slightly impacting swallowing. The consultant asked if I'd been around a lot of radiation and I have! Lots of xrays, CTs etc. not sure if that's relevant.

Anyway, FNA Monday then wait to hear.

Anyone been through similar in regards to thyroid nodules? I'm not too worried as thyroid cancers are very treatable. Just looking for anyone else who has been through this or similar. I don't think it's linked to my mesothelioma at all, recent MRI in July was NED thankfully!

Hi, yes, I’ve had an FNA on a thyroid nodule. Mine was one of the nasty ones but it is apparently not very common and most people who have thyroid nodules find they’re okay. The Macmillan forum is helpful if you want more info. Even if it does turn out to be malignant, I think you’ll find it pretty small fry compared to what you’ve been through before but that’s not fo say it isn’t stressful. I hope you’re okay OP.

Thank you so much.

How did you find the FNA?

I’ve had a FNA and it was pretty painless and very quick, I was back to work the same afternoon. Fingers crossed for good news for you OP.

Thank you! I don't know why I'm so scared of this FNA when I've had monster surgeries and a million needles and central lines Blush

Hi OP, I had an FNA on a thyroid nodule a few years ago, and it was ok... not comfortable, and I felt very tearful afterwards, but certainly not massively painful and I was fine going on my own and getting the bus home afterwards.

It'll definitely be a drop in the ocean compared to your mesothelioma treatment! Fingers crossed it comes back clear.

Hi @BMWM340, There's a thread over in general health with some of us at various stages of the thyroid cancer journey, it's titled 'Thyroid Cancer'. I've just had a hemithyroidectomy due a nodule that 'went rogue', they've determined that it wasn't cancerous but had cell changes. I have one on the remaining half and will be having an FNA in March on that one. I've had a couple of FNAs now and it's honestly fine, hardest thing is not swallowing! It's just a strange feeling. I drove myself there and back and although it was tender it was fine.

Yeah, the FNA wasn’t too bad, just like an injection, you will be fine with it OP, you’ve got this x
