Just that really. It's driving me nuts and don't have a dentist 🙄

I grew up in another country and it was always a case of hot poultice, lance the thing yourself then treat with TCP as a mouthwash or TCP on the wound first didn't sort it we got antibiotics then.

Menomeno · 10/12/2023 17:02

Please don’t just try to self-treat. I almost died from cellulitis/sepsis from a dental abscess. Ring 111 and get some antibiotics asap.

Do you really need to ask such a silly question-abcess is bacteria, burst it if you want to end up with sepsis.

Very obviously you need antibiotics, call 111 and ask for referral to nearest dental hospital.

Seesh.

Err... Not bursting the abscess is more likely to cause sepsis if anything. Bursting it lets all the bad out and should alleviate the pain. Depending on the cause it may need further treatment. I would see a dentist if you can but bursting it is unlikely to make things worse!

Mumaway · 10/12/2023 17:11

Nope, this is not how sepsis works. Relieving the pressure of the abscess will help the pain, and antibiotics struggle to manage an abscess without drainage as an adjunct. Traditionally boils etc would be lanced before the advent of antibiotics, because it works

It's no joke @gettingolderbutcooler

Bluelightbaby · 10/12/2023 22:18

Draining an abscess yourself is not issue, it will not cause sepsis - infact more likely the opposite. you’ll feel immediate relief, but you will likely need antibiotics. It will be hard to just ‘pop’ it though, you’d need to lance it or cut it open to allow drainage.

following that then salt water mouth wash or corsodyl if you have it

Cattiwampus · 10/12/2023 22:22

I lanced mine with a very fine, sterilised needle and used saltwater mouthwashes. No problems since. It’s how my mum dealt with them in the 50s.
There are no NHS dentists in my area of the SE who are taking on adult patients.

RiverCartwright · 10/12/2023 22:29

Of no use to you whatsoever, but I had one burst on a flight once. Concluded it was the pressure. Lovely flight attendant made me a warm salt water rinse and I took it into the loo. The relief was quite marvellous.

can only suggest OP you need a holiday 😉
Joking aside, hope you get some relief soon.
