To think you shouldn’t have to spend Christmas with people you don’t like

Talking about extended family here not immediate family obv!

YABU - yes you should, it’s Christmas and it happens once a year

YANBU - course not, it’s your day and it’s not worth being uncomfortable or unhappy

I haven't spent Christmas with people I don't like since I left home.
I prefer a small Christmas with just the people I live with .
So I don't think you are being unreasonable.

I can’t pick a side as I think it depends on circumstance. I was really not fond of MIL but DH cared about her, so I buttoned it and smiled my way through Christmases with her. It’s just a day.
That said, I do prefer being able to spend it as I please.

Every Christmas - YANBU

once in 10 years - YABU

I would never and I find it really strange that other people do. I suppose I'm just fortunate to have little family

It’s not always practical as you often can’t just leave one person out as they’re married or related to someone who you do like spending time with.

I think there’s a middle ground, depending on circumstances. MIL a bit irritating but means well? Suck it up occasionally. Abusive family? Absolutely not. Depends to what degree ‘don’t like’ is.

If it's a big family Christmas there is always going to be someone you don't get along with 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Well, no, but if it’s your sister in law, or nieces and nephews, you may just have to put up with it or just stay home.
