AIBU to ask who was right in this situation... Couple refused to move for a 'mum' and her 3 children on the train. (When the mum had reserved the seats.)

Just that really. Whose side are you on here?

I won't say much yet as I don't want to skew the poll results.

So pick YABU if you think the mum is in the wrong.

And pick YANBU if you think the couple is in the wrong.

Thank you for participating. Smile

Mother-of-three slams elderly couple for refusing to move from seats

Amanda Mancino-Williams claimed the couple refused to move after she advised them that she had pre-booked seats on the packed train from Cheltenham to Nottingham.

Couple is in the wrong. If they needed a seat they should have reserved a seat it's simple to do when you book your tickets.

PlanetOfTheDogs · 10/12/2023 03:11

The couple is in the wrong. Very entitled twats.

Well then the conductor didn't do their job properly.

They frequently do the move the person with a reserved seat to first.

If you have a reservation they have to find you a seat, not necessarily the one you reserved.

The couple are in the wrong. But so is the mum for going to that rag of paper over a none story.

With social media and chat boards being scoured by 'journalists' from rags like that one, do you really think that she went to the paper or might the paper have approached her having seen the posts on social media???

People wonder why the roads are so busy when you can get the train etc well I’ve never had someone else sat in my drivers seat in the car and I’ve never got to my car and it’s too full and I’ve never had my car announce it’s going on strike next Sunday. We should get rid of this silly old fashioned nonsense and invest more into the roads

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 10/12/2023 13:23

@DonnaBanana, I'm not arguing with you that road infrastructure needs more investment but lots of people don't or can't drive, don't have a car or only have one car in the household, so using the car isn't a viable alternative for every journey. Sometimes the train makes more sense too (for example, getting into central London, the train is a much more practical and efficient option than driving for most people). Railway infrastructure needs proper investment and support so that good quality services can be provided for people who need them.

The couple are in the wrong. Naming and shaming entitled, horrible people when they do selfish, greedy things is absolutely what to do about it. These people take, and do, what they want and idiots want to just let them! Had they apologised, and asked for some help getting everyone seated, it would have been different (I presume), but they were rude. If more people said NO they wouldn't try it so much.

It doesn’t matter who approached who, the mum sold her soul for a £1,000 probably. Pathetic.

No. The comments on the article in the Daily Daily Fail make it clear that it was well known locally that the previous train was cancelled. Therefore the reservations on this train were also cancelled. The DF was especially shoddy in not including this information.

The couple aren’t. You don’t know the full story - or haven’t read the thread.

Thissitestinks · 10/12/2023 18:37

So the woman had no reserved seats?! And the poor elderly couple were absolutely correct when they said the reservations didn't matter! And it's nearly five years old! Lol! Merry Christmas! X

Thissitestinks · 10/12/2023 18:42

I have now and am annoyed. If the woman's reservations were for a cancelled train then they 'don't matter', just as the couple said.
Merry Christmas xx

poetryandwine · 10/12/2023 18:58

Thanks, @Thissitestinks

poetryandwine · 10/12/2023 19:00

Actually IIRC the couple’s reservations were for the cancelled train but the outcome is the same, given that there were no valid reservations on the train everyone was on.

WarriorWeaver · 11/12/2023 15:51

There are critical details left out of the account given in order to incite people.

The woman's reservations were for a different, cancelled train! Why has this been left out?? The story is basically a lie.

no matter who is in the wrong or the right - posting photos all over the interwebs is very silly and shows the mothers lack of critical thinking skills.

I wouldn't invite any of them to a tea party that's for sure.

I get that you disapprove of her posting photos online but in what way does it show a ‘lack of critical thinking skills’?

That is a very popular mumsnet phrase but it’s pretty meaningless in this context, what point are you trying to make?

I don’t think she did, actually. It looks like the daily mail saw her tweets and lifted them for an article, the way they do with mumsnet threads all the time. They make it look like they’ve spoken to the person by quoting what they’ve said online, but they haven’t actually interacted at all.

Sounds like she has spoken to the Sun though:

Also speaking to the Sun, she claimed she had showed the couple her ticket, who told her they 'wouldn't be moving'.

Fair enough, maybe they reached out for input. I still don’t think it’s the same as her ‘selling her story’ though. These rags lift people’s social media and forum posts all the time and act like it’s journalism.
