Anyone else do this in small shops?

Lighthearted and not very interesting but...

My mum is visiting, we popped to the local shop earlier and I took my Tesco bag for life, the big thick one not the carrier bag style.

Once in the shop I started putting my shopping in it, Dm was horrified. She went and got a basket and made me carry the empty bag until we had paid then fill the bag up. She thought I looked like the most ballsy shoplifter ever just walking around filling up my bag.

Honestly never thought this was strange Blush had I put the bag in the basket I could still have put some things in to steal if I really wanted to. Plus the big bag takes up half the basket.

The shop is small with cameras and the staff know me it never occurred to me that it might be strange.

Does anyone else do it my way or have I been commuting some major corner shop faux pas?

They also are not allowed to look in your bag but can look in their own basket.

I wouldn't do that as people would think I'm intending to shoplift even though I'm not. Baskets are provided so I would use one.

It would, and for that reason it's pretty inconsiderate to the people working there. They'd feel as if they needed to keep an eye on you and you're generally just taking up a lot more of their mental space and attention than necessary. Particularly if it's OPs corner shop which may be a family business.

megletthesecond · 10/12/2023 09:13

No. I use a basket or carry items before I've paid for them.

daisychain01 · 10/12/2023 09:18

Hand scanner - yes, because it's designed to enable the shopper to save time by packing as you go

Any other means eg scan at till or regular till - no, I wouldn't use a bag Id wheel a trolly round. It's just easier and much less open to confusion.

ChishiyaBat · 10/12/2023 11:45

The last year there has been an increase in people filling their own bags and walking out, also filling trollies and running out, that is why we are told to look out for people filling their own bags. @SmudgeButt if you have worked in shops you know what you did was a shitty thing to do. What that manager said wasn't rude, it was factual, you hadn't paid for the goods, so you flouncing out was your choice.

sashh · 10/12/2023 07:28

Yes, I walk with a stick so using a basket means I don't have a free hand, I usually tell the security guard on the way in.

@ChishiyaBat so it is fine for staff to abuse customers?

I was once told to F off in ASDA, I have never shopped there since.

No it is absolutely not ok to abuse customers, I would never dream of telling a customer to fuck off. I have also been sworn at in asda so it must be an asda thing😂.

Same here except in Tesco and Morrisons! The latter also involved the checkout assistant sneezing all over my items on the conveyor belt.

ChishiyaBat · 10/12/2023 16:42

@Ykn Eww sneezing all over your stuff is gross, so it's not an asda thing then😂

Tessabelle74 · 10/12/2023 18:02

I do this because our local Asda never seems to have any baskets

Borborygmus · 10/12/2023 18:17

This used to be pretty common in Aldi before they introduced baskets. I don't recall ever seeing it happen elsewhere though, but I don't think it's acceptable behaviour.

pphammer · 10/12/2023 18:19

I always do that.
You can't even imagine how dirty those baskets are

Tryingmybestadhd · 10/12/2023 18:31

I’m have done that for years , makes perfect sense to me

Snowflakeslayer · 10/12/2023 18:32

Very strange behaviour. Get to the till, take all your shopping out of your bag, scan, then put back in the bag? Very special behaviour.
There is a simple basket system for a reason. No wonder our mental health system is at breaking point. LOL

Mt61 · 10/12/2023 18:42

I do it in the supermarket because the trolley s are usually filthy, when I get to the till & have emptied my bag on to the conveyor belt (that is usually filthy as well) I turn my bag upside down to show I don’t have any items in the bottom.. never shop in those small shops TBH!

Lindyloomillion1 · 10/12/2023 18:44

I do this sometimes. My local cheap supermarkets fairly often run out of trolleys (they get stolen apparently) and in a bid to punish the other shoppers, they don't get replaced for weeks.
So I shop into my bag for life, leaving it/them near the till between forays to pick up items.
Nobody has given it a glance, though on one occasion I tried to leave the store with my heavy shopping bag in one of their baskets on wheels I was hotly pursued to the car park by the security guard. I assured him I would return the basket and I did.
But they really need to get more trolleys.

MarchingOnTogether · 10/12/2023 19:00

I only put things in the bag before paying if I'm doing scan as you shop, I'd be worried of being accused of shoplifting otherwise!

Bunchymcbunchface · 10/12/2023 19:11

I do this in the supermarket as I never have a pound, so I fill a wheel along trolley. When that’s full I start using my bags

Middleagedspreadisreal · 10/12/2023 19:17

Never occured to me to do that. Don't think I will start now either.

YDBear · 10/12/2023 19:30

Why on earth would anyone do this? It’s far more faff taking stuff out of a bag to check out than out of a basket. Added to which you can carry more in a single basket than you can in a bag.

BrainWontWorkAnymore · 10/12/2023 19:35

All the time. Even got my father doing it. I walk with a stick though so can carry a bag on my arm then when I want something, that hand holds my stick and I can put the item in my bag

KeepThisToYourself · 10/12/2023 19:36

I'd have used a basket. It makes no sense to put things in a carrier bag then take it all out at the till.

SnozPoz · 10/12/2023 19:48

Definitely dodgy AF to put your shopping in your own bag before paying for it. Not sure why anyone thinks this is ok?!

Jeannie88 · 10/12/2023 19:49

I do this sometimes if only getting a few bits, do try to look as natural as possible and not as if I'm going to run out with it lol. 😅

housethatbuiltme · 10/12/2023 19:53

eh?

You would have to take it out again to scan, check, weigh anyway... of course its bizarre and totally unnecessary. Baskets exist for that exact reason.

kitsuneghost · 10/12/2023 20:20

I do this too. The hessian bag is lighter than a basket.
It's only shoplifting if you go out the front door
