To think the post office can't do this

DH ordered an iPhone as a Christmas present.

Delivered by Royal Mail tracked 48 to someone else. Random name signed for it. There is a picture of someones doorway - not ours or neighbours but you can't see much just the floorboards and a mat.

Royal Mail say it has been delivered to 'our area' Phone company say Royal Mail have delivered it so not their issue. Waiting to hear from the credit card company. But surely he Royal Mail can't just say delivered to the local area and write it off?

We once had something delivered to number 12 instead of us at 112. Royal Mail were able to tell us that though, we phoned they looked it up and told us which number and who had signed for it, so we could walk down and get it.
Something seems a bit off about 'local area."

Your contract is with the company he bought the phone from, not Royal Mail, so they are the ones you need to speak to to sort it out.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 09/12/2023 08:45

I would go back to the phone company and tell them you have not received it and that they need to look into it further. It is down to them to contact RM and find out who it has been delivered to, not you. Ultimately, they can claim compensation from RM and in the meantime they should send you out another phone.

Keepinmovin · 09/12/2023 08:46

The phone company are responsible for delivering you a phone. They have the agreement with Royal mail. So you have to tell them you haven't received it, it was not delivered to your house (per the photo) and therefore you have not received the goods you've paid for. It is their issue and their responsibility to pick with Royal mail but either way you want your phone.
Put in writing to the phone company using the templates here

DH has contacted the company who have in turn contacted the Royal Mail - they have reported back on the delivered to the 'local area' nonsense and both have washed their hands of it!

Thank you will look at this

Yes YABU - the Post Office and Royal Mail are completely separate companies and have been for some time.

As per PP - you need to go back to the company you bought the phone from and insist they rectify it. If you paid by credit card (looks like you did), and the phone was over £100, you’re likely to have section 75 protection (looks like you’re aware of that from your OP).

So one way or another, it will get sorted. But frustrating.

AussieManque · 09/12/2023 08:51

I had this, delivered to a random person with a photo of their hallway, it was definitely my package. Then it turned out it hadn't actually been delivered at all (or had been taken back) as there was a card saying collect it at the sorting centre and it was there. So confusing and stressful.

ALittleBitAhAh · 09/12/2023 08:56

If you're on Twitter, post on there. Only way I've got a decent response from some companies 🙈

NoCloudsAllowed · 09/12/2023 08:58

Contact them in writing with complaint included at top, say you don't have it, pic of delivery isn't your house, they should send you a phone as per contract or refund.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 09/12/2023 08:58

I had this with royal mail for some expensive head phones. John Lewis wouldn't engage with me at all as RM said it had been delivered, even though there was no proof at all.

Similar to pp, it hadn't been delivered and turned up a month and a day later. The writing on the package showed they had written the wrong redelivery date on it eg 1 July not 1 June. I had already lodged the dispute with my credit card who sided with me and gave me a refund (I was irritated to have to then return the item!!)

It's worth going to your local depot to see if it is there ( take ID) and then ask your credit card company.

lartghy421 · 09/12/2023 09:00

Also bear in mind the person collecting it may put it up on a local fb page " package for xyz delivered to me in error". I see it all the time on my local page

Badlands1 · 09/12/2023 09:06

On the other side I have a package with 4 pairs of new jeans delivered to me in error by DHL. They were delivering another package at the same time so I didn't notice until I opened it. I have emailed the company numerous times and they can't seem to arrange anyway of collecting them or don't care. They are sitting here but if they don't come back to me I'm tempted to take them to a charity shop!

Whenever I've bought anything as expensive as an iPhone there has been a verification code sent to me that I've had to produce before the courier/delivery person hands it over. Ask the phone company why this security step wasn't implemented and remind them that since it wasn't, you're not liable 🤷‍♂️

10HailMarys · 09/12/2023 09:35

I’m surprised the phone company used Tracked 48 for something as expensive as an iPhone, for this very reason!

Badlands1 · 09/12/2023 09:51

@10HailMarys
Totally agree!
