Looking for some input - specifically about Occupational Therapy or similar.
I'm 54 years old, have a Modern Languages degree and a previous commercial career, in a management position. 10 years ago I changed tack and found a job working with young adults with additional needs.
I love my current job and I am good at it, but it is unsatisfying for a couple of reasons: 1) It is very badly paid. 2) My working environment does not allow much scope to progress, as I am outside of the career pathway in this organisation.
Most of the time I am satisfied, I feel appreciated at work and I can feel I make a visible difference to the young people's lives. But I am a bit fed up with the poor pay (especially at my life stage, when I should be looking to building up my pension) and the lack of advancement, when I am being managed by people with half my experience. Today things came to a head at work, when I had a row with someone "senior", and I am seriously considering why I am making do with a junior role when I feel I have so much more to offer.
I am thinking about quitting my job, but considering re-training.
I would love to hear from people who have taken on a new qualification / direction at my age, and particularly people who work in Occupational Therapy or similar. My particular specialty in my current role is coaching / assisting people with disabilities into employment.
