TO NOT WANT TO BE GLARED AT FOR ASKING FOR TAP WATER?

as there is a push on asking for tap in restaurants in stead of bottled i would not have expected the waiter to glare at me then as he passed his collegue he said something and they both stared at me. little shit.

Me and dp are professional tap water requesters and I like to quote lots of laws at them if they give me an gip.

I'm not sure if there are laws about it, but I like to make out that there are. And if they say they don't have access to tap water, I say I will report them to health and safety, that usually does the trick.

NO-ONE should pay for bottled water. It is insane.

lulu25 · 14/03/2008 12:14

whuh?

bottled water is so over even the evening standard are running stories on it.

YABU, you should feel smug for being so fashionable.

ill remember that one, wish i had said something now, nearly everywhere else they are fine, i think its the expensive restaurants as they must be loosing loads, especially at £4 a bottle.

Nowadays I try to take DS school water bottle everyehere. Funnily enough nowhere has complained. But we usually spend a -fortune- quite a lot on cofee, cakes, paninis, crisps etc., so they can't complain really. Unless they want to lose a valuable customer.

Sushipaws · 14/03/2008 12:16

I regularly ask for tap water and a bottle appears on the table like I'd made some kind of mistake by asking for tap. I have complained so many times and people look at me like I'm mad. Keep pushing though and they'll click eventually, or when the oil runs out and we have no more plastic, or when the land fills are full and rubbish becomes an even bigger problem.

choccypig · 14/03/2008 12:17

Spelling is fine, typing is -crap-

Lauriefairycake · 14/03/2008 12:18

I always ask for tap water because I disagree with buying bottled water on ethical grounds (70% of the world don't have access to fresh water so we are very lucky to have access to it - and the environmental aspect of the processing of it too, yada yada)

I also make sure to spend money in the restaurant on other drinks and food as they need to make money.

To me, a good restaurant learns to make money on good food - it's lazy restauranting to try and make money on water.

I would leave if glared at in any restaurant - plenty of great places to patronise

Furball · 14/03/2008 12:39

I always ask for tap water too! I got charged £1.80 the other week for 1/2 pnt of soda water would of been cheaper to have 1/2 a frigging larger!!!!

hifi · 14/03/2008 12:46

i always take dd drink in a cup, haven't been pulled up for that yet. most countries have a jug of water for you , again its rip of Britain.

InTheDollshouse · 14/03/2008 12:58

yup, in Australia they automatically bring you a jug of tap water (cold from the fridge) as soon as you sit down.

girlfrommars · 15/03/2008 00:26

Name and shame them Hifi

Scramble · 15/03/2008 00:27

I ask for a glass of water a lot and haven't had any problems.

mamhaf · 15/03/2008 11:42

I ask for a jug of water...then it has to be from the tap.

clam · 15/03/2008 11:54

I couldn't give a stuff if they glare. Think I would raise an eyebrow and ask if there were some sort of problem with that. I've never understood the obsession with bottled water - it's just such a rip-off, apart from anything else. I have only ever succumbed and bought it if we're out and about and caught short with thirst. Otherwise, I fill up the empty bottles from the tap.

SugarBird · 15/03/2008 12:43

Rude waiter - hope you didn't leave a tip. I always ask for tap water in a restaurant and haven't had any problems so far. We also fill empty bottles from the tap (I find them less likely to leak than sports bottles).
There was a restaurant near us that used to charge for tap water but I think they've stopped now (needless to say I don't go there any more...)

BearMama · 15/03/2008 12:48

Ooh no YANBU. I always ask for tap water. Always have. The waiter was a twat.

itsahardknocklife · 15/03/2008 13:02

I like to ask for tap water too. I don't wee why I should pay over a pound for a glass of water when I am paying for a meal. DH gets emabarrassed about us both asking, so he buys a soft drink though. I don't care - I'm not trying to impress some pimply waiter!

bigbumhole · 15/03/2008 14:37

I hope you didn't tip him Good for you for asking for tap water. I always think there's something a bit poncy about bottled water anyway. You go girl!
