Will I be in trouble with hmrc?

I have to pay back child benefit in the sum of 500. I miscalculated this and on the form I put 420. What will happen now? I have huge anxiety and I am worried they will think this was deliberate.

Also can you pay it in one lump sum on a credit card? I just want to pay it off

Have you got an online Goverment gateway / tax account?
That’s the simplest way to sort it out.

Also useful for checking your NI history.

I doubt they'll kick over a stink over what to them is pennies OP.

Can you ring them? I've always found them very nice if you can actually get through.

I’ve tried to call and can’t get through. I am so stressed and worried about how to pay it. I have the money but haven’t heard from them and now I’ve realised I’ve made a mistake in the calculation

Yes just phone them, once you get through their crap automated bit and get through to a human they're very helpful and can solve most things.

Confused38246 · 07/12/2023 13:30

Nothing. You ring them, explain, repay the overpayment.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 07/12/2023 13:31

X post. Keep trying the phone, you'll get someone. And try not to worry.

Northernlass13 · 07/12/2023 13:44

Hi Op, please don’t worry! I work for HMRC. It’s nothing to worry about.

its really common in regards to child benefit as most people don’t understand thresholds and how it actually works.

once payment has been made, HMRC will contact you if anything is outstanding. You can pay it online and I would recommend setting up a personal tax account online. Or you can call. Last thing at night or early morning normally is quite.
please don’t worry, it will get sorted xx

As far as I'm aware, but it's been a while since I've done one as my area of accounting is different, you can't pay on a credit card. The rules changed (10?) years ago. Debit cards are fine, or bank transfer.

I call Hmrc every day as part of my job. Start dialling at 07.58, I always get through.

Oblomov23 · 07/12/2023 14:57

Please stop worrying. You are small fry you them. Phone them, suggest a payment plan, eg £100 immediately and then for the next 4 months. (Or similar). It will then be paid off and they will be happy with this. Once they have an agreement a payment plan, then their manager never gives the HMRC employee any hassle once it's agreed.

Marmight · 07/12/2023 15:27

Hang on, are you repaying the child benefit from 2022/2023 or this tax year?
If last tax year, its not due until 31/01/2024 and if its from this tax year, you have until 31/01/2025.
Are you the higher earner or your partner? If it's your partner, he/she has to pay it.Not you. Are you paying it all back as either you or your partners income is > £60k?
Are you paying it back via self assessment online?
I don't think HMRC accept credit cards. They do accept debit cards

Do get in touch with HMRC.

I was hauled over the coals for Self Assessment Returns that were 1p, 3p and 37p out across three years - in my favour.

When you speak to them, ask for letters to confirm everything. They will offer you a payment plan, related to your income and ability to pay.

Like pp's I've always found HMRC extremely kind and helpful, it's like they're so chuffed that some one actually wants to talk to them 😉
