Made to pay for a bag in the supermarket

Just picked up a few bits for Xmas food shop.

Had baby with me and she was tired so getting a bit irritable.

Scanned all my shopping at self checkout, ended up with a quite a lot more than I needed (as you do).

Baby crying. Paid for my shopping.

Realised I needed a bag at this point so got one and put all my stuff in there.

Go to walk out.

The shop assistant said I needed to pay for a bag. Fair enough.

She said I had to rescan it.

Baby now screaming and wriggling out my arms. Heavy bag of shopping in the other hand.

She made me wait there until she'd scanned a bag, pressed 'check-out' , selected 'pay by card' and then I had to scan. All for bloody 30p.

In hindsight, I do understand I had to pay for the bag but I was so bloody frustrated and just wanted to get out of there that I paid 30p for the bag and stormed off. Left my giant trolley in the middle of self checkout. I was at my wits end. I felt like I was at school being held back by the teacher.

It's 30 bloody pence. Let me go!!

She acted like she was earning money out of making people pay for bags.

YABU - everyone ALWAYS must pay for bags no matter what

YANBU - in the circumstance, she should have just let me go all for the sake of 30p plastic bag.

I agree, I feel you! It's like being at school in SOME supermarkets ( budget ones). That's why I go out of my way to go to certain ones who treat customers WITH RESPECT. I'm not going to be spoken to like a naughty schoolgirl that I am!! Recently there was a line of broken self checkouts, BAR one ,which was working.. To keep order Staff had designated area to ' wait ' for this . I decided to ' REBEL' just because I can and I'm not at school and the teen worker has no juristiiction over ME , I ' wandered' from the area and into the checkout area...... Staff ' noticed'...admonished me, I REPLIED : " AM I BEING TOLD OFF???????". IM REBELLING TODAY, SCK IT UP. !!!!

So the staff member was trying to keep the queue in a specific area - presumably to stop people wandering off and then trying to queue jump - and you were a dick to a teenager because you were "rebelling"?

That's the kind of logic and behaviour I expect from my own teen, not a grown adult.

ScartlettSole · 09/12/2023 20:46

So having a baby means you can shoplift 🙄

Mumof2girls2121 · 09/12/2023 20:47

its really annoying that they charge for bags

Shootin · 09/12/2023 21:01

Shame on you

ScartlettSole · 09/12/2023 21:07

Shootin · 09/12/2023 18:38

Let me reiterate this - she had already paid for her food.Numerous times I have realised I needed another bag sometimes more. Yes I paid. But I wasn’t struggling with a baby. Poor mum was tired and overwhelmed. She was just focusing on getting out of the shop. She doesn’t deserve these nasty and rude comments.
Exactly ONE bag. 30 bloody pence.

What if that shop assistant was "mum tired" (forgot no bugger else can be tired, mums apparently have a monopoly on it) why should she deal with the OPs rude and nasty attitude? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Shootin · 09/12/2023 21:13

Because she wasn’t juggling with a baby and heavy bag.
If she was ‘mum tired’ she would have sympathised with her. And turned a blind eye.
It’s not rocket science.

itsgettingweird · 09/12/2023 21:31

I always forget a bag.

Just wheel the trolley to car and Chuck in boot.

Out in bag when you get home and have time

rmcc1983 · 09/12/2023 21:39

So because you had a baby you are now exempt from the law, yeah? Catch yourself on! Why do some people think that just because they have reproduced, the whole world owes them? Newsflash - you aren’t the first person to have a child.

You're not a schoolgirl, but you ARE a giant dick! That young girl is getting minimum wage to deal with the likes of you! Do you feel big and clever? *Slow clap 🙄

Wishbone436 · 09/12/2023 21:59

I sometimes wonder why we get such a bad rap as parents .. then I read stuff like this 🤯 Nooe, being a parent, even of a young baby who is tired/screaming/grumpy, doesn’t exempt you from the rule 🤷🏻‍♀️

gemma19846 · 09/12/2023 22:18

90% of shoppers are probably having a bad day too, you dont get free stuff because youre having a bad day

Duechristmas · 09/12/2023 22:30

Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency for anybody else. Pay for the bag, take your own, but don't expect special favours because you are a parent.

Bobsyouraunty · 09/12/2023 22:40

I think you’re being unreasonable.

Your mistake and then you treat the staff like that???

World isn’t going to stop for your crying baby

Bobsyouraunty · 09/12/2023 22:41

Incredibly entitled attitude evidenced in the way your treated the staff. Get over yourself

WonderWoman1009 · 10/12/2023 00:25

YABU - 100%. You wouldn't pick up a 30p chocolate bar and walk out a shop without paying because your baby is crying? It would be theft... she can get in trouble and shops can be fined for not charging for bags. She could potentially lose her job.

LowLevelGrumpMostly · 10/12/2023 00:28

Wait until the baby becomes a toddler has a screaming meltdown and flings a can of Farrow&Ball paint off the shelf onto the floor. The sinking feeling that posh paint costs £50 a can. The sea of paint. I immediately paid as their stock and was just so grateful they didn’t charge me cleaning costs. A screaming child isn’t really an excuse to pinch stuff. At least you got a bag for that 30p. I did consider dropping her off at the local orphanage on the way home!

twilightmoon3 · 10/12/2023 01:16

And a Mumsnet lynching party everyone's invited bring your own tomatoes paid for of course. If we tolerate this then your children will be next

Christ!! Thankyou thankyou thankyou !!
Exactly this!!!

I don't have children, but I do work 12 hour shifts.... If I go shopping after a night shift, do you think I can get a free shopping bag, because I'm a bit out of it??

Ridiculous Hmm
(Not sure if this op is a wind up tbh?)

Livelifelaughter · 10/12/2023 02:26

People are just awful on MN sometimes. And I am not talking about OP. All those who think that she shouldn't get special treatment because she's a mother ? Jesus, we are talking about a 30p carrier bag. I presume all you perfect parents out there who are lynching OP for special treatment have never taken time off work for childcare issues, didn't claim maternity leave, pay VAT on children's clothes, order a full meal instead of a child's meal because heaven forbid special treatment...

Luckyduc · 10/12/2023 04:02

Your the type of customer I'd definitely make payment for it, just out of the sheer ignorance and entitlement....I'd even pretend to make mistakes and scan slow. If you walked out with the bag, it's theft...bags arnt free to make or buy in and they arnt there for anyone to take, it's a product you buy.
Christmas is 2 weeks away and you didn't need to pick that day to pick up up few bits.
