Security cameras and cleaner - what's the etiquette??

Genuine question as I haven't had this issue before.

We recently put a couple of security cameras up in our home (for good reasons that I don't want to go into, but rest assured absolutely nothing to do with our cleaner). We've had a cleaner for the best part of 6 months now and she's wonderful, very thorough. However I'm wondering where we stand with the cameras running when she's there? Should we temporarily disable them? Is it legal to have them running when she's there? My friend said it could be a breach of GDPR to have them running while she's there? I don't want to do anything dodgy or make her feel uncomfortable so not sure what to do.

I've messaged her to pre warn her about the cameras and ask if she's OK with it but no response as yet.

Anyone else had this issue? Any helpful input appreciated!

Don't know what the law says, but I wouldn't want to work for you if you left the cameras on

Just wait for her response, if she's happy with them great. If she's not, then you can either turn them off when she's there or find a new cleaner.

The key thing is you've informed her about them.

I assume they're not in the bathroom?

Out of nosiness I'd love to know why you have cameras inside your home.

Unless your cleaner doesn't mind (and I'm sure she will) turn the cameras off when she's working.

Oh no of course not in the bathroom! No bedrooms either. Hallway and living room only

We've had some unfortunate incidents with a family member who we have since realised we can't trust, that's all I'm prepared to say. Suffice to say, we need the cameras in the specific locations they are. But we obviously don't need or want to film the cleaner so I'm not sure how to navigate this.

Will the family member be there when the cleaner is?

If not turn cameras off. If they are can, you explain to the cleaner beforehand and take it from there. You might have to keep tabs on the family member if the cleaner isn't keen.

I've had a response to say she doesn't mind either way if they're on or off! Issue resolved. Thanks everyone.

Have you told the cleaner where the cameras are?

Elfandwellbeing · 07/12/2023 09:31

Unless the family member is a child, I cannot comprehend why you have a camera inside your home instead of asking the said person to leave. It’s very sad I am sure and not easy but you shouldn’t need a cctv to watch you in your own home.

Doubleespresso33 · 07/12/2023 09:31

It’s not a breach of GDPR, but I think you do have to inform her she’s being filmed and possibly where/what the footage would be used for (I.e social media to out someone or police involvement etc) or at least out of courtesy but if they are there for your safety then it’s fair. Just give her the option for them to be turned off if your happy to do so

LIZS · 07/12/2023 09:33

You need her consent to record and store the data. Or just disable it while she is inside. Presumably she is able to monitor security, pets or whatever the issue is.

We have cameras in kitchen , living area and by both doors - we have a cleaner and we leave them on all the time. We have them due to SEN adult in the home

Yes. She's happy for them to be left on as I updated above.

Your post was not there when I posted so good to hear she is happy.
