to think that air-fryers are just a passing fad?

I know that they are everywhere do everything right now, but I'm sure that they'll soon join the steamers, breadmakers and George Foreman grills living in the back of the kitchen cupboard. The slow-cookers can stay on the worktop.

I bought a second hand Ninja Foodie, and to be honest I don't really get it. Do many people that cook from scratch really use them instead of the oven and hob? Or is it more like Pampered Chef that produced a lot of things for people that are not confident cooks that they didn't really need?

I am going to try cooking a 40 minute meringue in it later today though, so that might make me change my mind - I usually leave mine overnight in the oven for maximum crispy gooeyness, but an almost instant pavlova sounds fab!

We got a cheap one not realising you need the ones that go to higher temps to cook anything other than chips😅 Will never relegate the George Forman, we live by it!!!

The Cult of the Air Fryer is here to stay.

Recently joined myself, and my only regret is that I did not welcome a slightly higher capacity model into my home.

Busy investigating the possibility of Air Fryer ramen noodles.

They’ve already been around for years as it is though? I had a tefal one years back with the paddle and had ninjas since. They are only growing in popularity. I think they’re really useful because ovens are a staple in a kitchen and they do everything an oven does, only faster and for smaller portions. Can’t see how they won’t be staying around.

Sheepskinthrow · 06/12/2023 14:21

They are brilliant for teens! And we do an outdoor hobby from which a lot of people return to our place tired, damp and hungry and they are great in that situation too!

housethatbuiltme · 06/12/2023 14:29

Mine is used every week... only wish I could convince DH to get rid of the awful oil fryer he has that coats everything in the kitchen a film of grease when used.

On the flip side I have NEVER used a slow cooker in my life.

Its almost like different people like and use different things.

DinoDays · 06/12/2023 14:34

Depends if you think microwaves or slow cookers are a passing fad.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 06/12/2023 14:39

We're a large household and we use ours all the time. We've had loads over the years, and our latest is one of the large ninja double drawer ones.

Excellent for veg, meat, synchronising when food is done, great for those of us working from home and having lunch, and excellent for cooking my son his safe foods in after school.

Easy to clean, drawers slide out and go in the dishwasher, the inside of the air fryer can be wiped down.

We only use our oven now for things that physically will not fit, like a turkey. It's so infrequent.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 06/12/2023 14:44

Mine is on my counter next to my slow cooker. I use it nearly every day. A lovely crispy baked potato for lunch takes less than 10 minutes. It's not going anywhere. And don't get me started on DS and how much he uses his.

Teder · 06/12/2023 14:46

The speed of it is what impresses me. It’s quicker than the oven because it doesn’t need
pre heating. It is cheaper to run (for my electricity supplier for sure).
When people lead insanely busy lives, surely it’s better they are making quick and easy healthier things in an air fryer. 🤷🏻‍♀️

GladioliandSweetPeas · 06/12/2023 14:57

Well no, I've been using one since 2011. So definitely not.

GuitarGeorgina · 06/12/2023 15:15

I don’t really like mine.

it’s useful for teenagers to cook something when they need to, but I think most things taste better cooked in a conventional oven, and I find cleaning it a faff.

weegiemum · 06/12/2023 15:32

I have a bread maker, George Foreman grill, steamer and air fryer. I use at least one on then every day and all of them at least once a month!

Starbeeees · 06/12/2023 15:34

It’s a huge deal just now, but I’ve had one since the original Phillips came out (about 12 years ago 😀) so they’ve always been around, they’ve just got really popular.
I’ve never been without one since

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 06/12/2023 15:37

Dunno. They're of no interest to me. I do probably 80% of my cooking on the hob and the rest in the slow cooker with a tiny amount in the oven. I'm not a fan of gadgety crap that clutters the place up.

Roasting is a great flavoursome cooking technique for vegetables, meats, potatoes, fruits etc that you can't do in a pan or pot.

And? I cook mostly Asian food and don't wish to roast it. If I wanted to roast my food I have an oven beneath my stove so don't feel the need to have another smaller version of it sat on the counter.

MasterBeth · 06/12/2023 15:50

Good for you.

UnimaginableWindBird · 06/12/2023 15:54

I always assumed that they were just a fad, but my dad, who is an excellent cook and has a teeny tiny cupboard-sized kitchen in his London flat, bought one recently and has been raving about it ever since.

MarkWithaC · 06/12/2023 15:54

I use my friends' when I'm housesitting for them, and I do like it. I use it for freezer stuff like fish fingers, as well as things like salmon fillets/steaks and chunky veg (it does good roast courgettes).
It's also great for part-baked bread and pastries that I don't want to put a whole oven on for.
I haven't tried baking in it, or anything like a lasagne or cottage pie.

At home it's just me and DP, sometimes just me, so I think it would be big enough and I would use it, but I can't quite justify the counter space; we're short as it is.

Same, I actually worked on the original Philips launch and still have the very first model! Used almost daily and a complete work horse!

ReadyForPumpkins · 06/12/2023 16:19

@MasterBeth Same as @StrictlyComeSnoozing I cook Chinese mostly. Oven isn't a must have for a lot of people. I always stir fry my vegetables.

GimmeSleep · 06/12/2023 16:21

I've found this handy if I'm not sure on timings

to think that air-fryers are just a passing fad?
thedementedelf · 06/12/2023 16:22

I've had an air fryer since they came out 11/12 years ago, it's been used constantly since I got it. I only replaced my original this year. That thing just kept going until it couldn't anymore.

thedementedelf · 06/12/2023 16:23

@soberfabulous I absolutely loved my tefal but it sadly sounded like an airplane was landing towards the end and then just didn't make a sound.

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 06/12/2023 16:28

MasterBeth · 06/12/2023 11:29

It's one of the few kitchen gadgets I think has a future. It's just a tiny oven, but heats up more quickly. Genunely better than an over for quikc and small needs.

This.

I agree other things have been a fad- like the George formans and sandwich toasties.

I use my air fryer everyday and it saves money. Can’t see it going out unless something quicker/cheaper than can cook a wide range of things comes on the market.
