to think that air-fryers are just a passing fad?

I know that they are everywhere do everything right now, but I'm sure that they'll soon join the steamers, breadmakers and George Foreman grills living in the back of the kitchen cupboard. The slow-cookers can stay on the worktop.

I bought a second hand Ninja Foodie, and to be honest I don't really get it. Do many people that cook from scratch really use them instead of the oven and hob? Or is it more like Pampered Chef that produced a lot of things for people that are not confident cooks that they didn't really need?

I am going to try cooking a 40 minute meringue in it later today though, so that might make me change my mind - I usually leave mine overnight in the oven for maximum crispy gooeyness, but an almost instant pavlova sounds fab!

It's one of the few kitchen gadgets I think has a future. It's just a tiny oven, but heats up more quickly. Genunely better than an over for quikc and small needs.

Ifailed · 06/12/2023 11:30

I suspect the majority will go the way of bread-makers, ice-cream makers and other kitchen fads, but I can see the benefits of a small fan-oven will still be of interest to smaller households.

Ilovegoldies · 06/12/2023 11:31

Mine is hear to stay. Better results and cheaper to run than my oven.

DappledThings · 06/12/2023 11:31

I suspect so. We don't have one yet but PIL are getting DH one for Christmas. I've tried to put him off but he's sure he'll use it loads.

gotomomo · 06/12/2023 11:32

Another fad, for those living alone they make sense but for everyone else they don't because who wants to cook multiple batches, just like microwaves cooking 4 meals one after another. If you are watching the cost of cooking the hob is your best bet

Sausagenbacon · 06/12/2023 11:32

Not so long ago steam cleaners were the big thing on my. Then it was heated clothes racks. Shortly it will be airfryers.

Chilicabbage · 06/12/2023 11:33

I like mine instead of oven. I cook from scratch most of the time. It's faster

Sausagenbacon · 06/12/2023 11:33

Mn not my

OnlyCorrect · 06/12/2023 11:33

We're a 2 person household, so it's basically replaced the oven which only gets switched on once a week for bread (dough made in breadmaker). Been like this for 4 years now.

TrixieFatell · 06/12/2023 11:33

We use ours on a daily basis, I've never had another kitchen gadget I used so much. Perhaps if they I prove and get a better version but I think we will always have some sort of air fryer.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/12/2023 11:33

I love mine. I shall replace it with a bigger one when it breaks.

CranfordScones · 06/12/2023 11:34

I don't have one. Very few appliances survive the passing-fad-test. Microwaves did because they added something new and useful.

I suspect that air-fryers will be around for a long time. Many people do rave about them in ways they never did for health grills and steamers and spiralisers(!!) and other solutions looking for a problem.

I do wonder if some people like them a little too much so it's easy to go for the fried option instead of something more healthy.

CountryStore · 06/12/2023 11:34

I use it instead of the oven. 2 person household.

anotheropinion · 06/12/2023 11:35

I assume they're particularly effective for single person or small-family oven food. Kiev and chips for one, straight from the freezer, they should be great for? Rather than serving a larger family or cooking more traditional home-made food?

Issummernearlyover · 06/12/2023 11:36

I've used my oven twice since I bought my air fryer, because pizzas don't fit. I've got the one where you can use just one or two drawers and take out the divider to make one big one. We do a roast dinner in it.

This. Exactly. It's a just small oven that is more efficient energy wise. As long as you realise that's really all it is it's brilliant. I have used my actual oven once since getting it in January. We are a family of four adult appetites and use our 9.5l ninja all the time. I cook from scratch 95% of the time too and I guess DH I could be referred to as foodies (definitely at the weekend). It stays on the counter all the time for us as it is used so much. I don't use it for potatoes though as my actifry cannot be beaten for that. Great combo.

CasaAmarela · 06/12/2023 11:37

My air fryer has literally changed my life 😂Halves the cooking time and there's not many things I can't cook in it. I do still use my hob but rarely use the oven now.

skippy67 · 06/12/2023 11:37

We got one about 4 months ago. Love it, and hardly use the oven now. I've made all sorts in it including a full Sunday roast. Fajitas come out great too, and no frying pan!

Kayte198999 · 06/12/2023 11:37

I don't think they'll be around for long. I know you can make lots of clever things in them but I've never actually seen anyone cook anything other than breaded food. The ones my friends have are so small you can only do a couple of portions

dottypencilcase · 06/12/2023 11:38

4 person household here and we use it all the time. Have used one for the past 8 years so don't think it's a fad.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 06/12/2023 11:38

I use mine daily. It's cheaper than my oven and faster too . Not for a Sunday roast but chips , sausages , bacon , fish fingers etc

MindHowYouGoes · 06/12/2023 11:40

Mine does roasts, grills, bakes, dehydrates as well as fries. It’s got a probe so you can put it in meat and it will cook it perfectly. As a terrible cook there’s no way I’d give up my air fryer

Great for roasting vegetables, baking halloumi, jacket potatoes after microwaving, cheese on toast, roasting chicken thighs, breasts, salmoln etc. Anything you might pop in the oven but in half the time and much more cost-effective.

minipie · 06/12/2023 11:40

I can definitely see the benefits for a smaller household or depending on what you use an oven for.

I tend to use the oven for quite large stuff - big traybakes and pasta bakes, roast incl veg, pizza, part bake baguettes. I don’t think they’d fit in most air fryers due to the width.
A warming drawer sized oven (normal width but just one shelf high) would be more useful to me. Should’ve got one of those one and a half ovens.

GimmeSleep · 06/12/2023 11:40

I have a Ninja 11-1 and use it for pressure cooking too; I've not tried the slow cooker function as apparently it's not great.
Does fantastic Parmentier potatoes and sausages come out brilliantly.
Doesn't need to be pre-heated as it a lot quicker than the normal oven.
