To not do decorations this year?

We are in the middle of having our kitchen replaced, ceiling down, cabinets all demolished ect.
It's a housing association property so had no say in when this was to happen.
We are 2 weeks into no access to a washing machine or cooker.
Our kitchen appliances are all currently stored in the hallway which means clutter, stress and a mountain of dirty washing.

We have 4 kids that live here full time and 2 big dogs.

Kitchen should hopefully be finished this week though the workmen are barely turning up, only arriving last night at 5 to screed the floor.
But...they want to them rip out n replace all the windows in the property, I've been waiting for this since they measured them back in January! So I'm happy they're doing it, it's just not a good time with Christmas around the corner.

Anyway, with all this going on I really don't want the added clutter of Christmas decorations and tree, would I be unreasonable to just not put any up this year with all the clutter, stress and mess I'm already dealing with??

I've already done my Christmas shopping and wrapping, I made sure to sort that before the work started on my kitchen (didn't want the added stress)

Christmas stresses me out every year just by itself but this year it feels like my house is a building site with mess everywhere :(

I would put some lights in kids' rooms and call it a day. I grew up in Northern Europe and we have a tradition of putting up candle bridges in windows on the first of December. They are cute for children's rooms and I can go without decorations as long as my candle bridge is up.

YANBU. As PP says, something small as a token decoration. Maybe consider Christmas in July as your deferred celebration?

I'm.not sure about how the kids would feel about a delayed Christmas lol
Older ones are secondary school aged.

I might just go with the token decoration

It’s almost three weeks until Christmas, you don’t need to make any final decisions on December 5th. Your DC aren’t babies so it’s easy to explain you’re going to hold off until the renovations are finished before decorating the house - and they’re old enough to pitch in with the cleaning and tidying up if they want to make those decorations happen faster!

I don't bother with a tree and all the trimmings. But then again there are no kids here, but IME the adults are worse when it comes to lack of decos!

I only put fairy lights around the fireplace, and on the front windowsill. Battery operated LED, non flashing. Then a few battery tealights around the place. Looks great and so easy to take down when it's all over.

Do what's best for you. In your circumstances I'd run away with all that work going on, but it will be fab when finished. A few lights and battery candles will do for this year.
