To not have a theme for our Christmas tree?

Our Christmas tree is so random.
4 kids and we pretty much let them do whatever ever they want re decorating the tree. Decoration day starts with a trip to Dobbies so everyone can choose a new bauble. Nothing matches yet i tell myself it’s kind of magical but I keep seeing all these wonderful themed trees and wondering if we should be making more of an effort?!

Entitled to your opinion! Seems like username checks out 😂

I hate themed trees....ours is full of beautiful memories and special baubles we've collected with our children over the years. They get to choose a new one every year.

Inyourwildestdreams · 05/12/2023 05:10

We have a coordinated tree (golds and whites - not just plain baubles, there are lots of other decorations on there too) as I bought a tree and decs when DH and I started living together. Neither of us have any decs from childhood etc so we were starting from scratch. We’ve added a bauble each year from somewhere that we’ve been on a trip or whatever. We now have DS (3yo) and he makes a dec each year to add. The coordinated look is slowly being taken over by a nice mix of memories which I’m delighted about 😊

We get the plain ceramic ones from Hobbycraft (DS picks what he wants - so far we have a circle from 1st Xmas, a star, a car and a house) and DS paints it in whatever colours he likes, I paint the year on the back/bottom and then we varnish it and it goes on the tree 😊

Same here. I hate the current trend of the ‘perfect’ everything for Christmas. Let the kids have fun! And making memories is what it should be about. My tree has shit they made me in nursery; my kids are in their 30s.

Same! I was devastated last year when the 30 year old 'salt dough' Santa that my now 35 year old DD made snapped 😢

All my decorations have memories or stories attached to them...I love the beauty of them ♥️ (and would hate a 'themed tree')

Scaraben · 05/12/2023 05:46

I am 36 and my parents tree still has the felt tip penned block of wood that was the first decoration I ever made. No theme, just nice stuff that makes them smile. Our tree has a similar "theme" and the last few years my DD has had a lovely time painting / making a new bauble for it. This year she has been sneaking squishmallows into the tree and is clearly delighted that it just makes us laugh rather than tell her to take them out. As a kid I remember doing the exact same with my brother and his little green army men.

No theme here. I hate them. I've just collected random decorations over the years. I try and pick up a few each year from craft stalls. My most treasured one is a Grover from Sesame Street tree decoration. I've also got a Stuart Little. Glass gingerbread men, felt pigs in little blankets. It brings me such joy. I wouldn't get that with a multipack of white baubles.

boohooloo · 05/12/2023 05:59

Themed trees are so 1990's Debenhams.

Zanatdy · 05/12/2023 06:00

I’d rather look at a tree with history, decorations passed down through generations, children’s decorations etc than a themed silver and white tree. I can just imagine the Instagram mums look of horror when precious DC comes out of school with a toilet roll Angel asked to put it on top of the tree. Cue quick trip to Homebase to buy the children’s tree, safely locked away in their bedroom and never shared on Instagram

HappyDaze23 · 05/12/2023 06:01

The ‘theme’ of our tree is happy memories. Lots of mismatched decorations, some handmade but it also, genuinely, looks lovely. Very few mass produced baubles and lots of carefully chosen bits that have little stories behind them. There’s so many interesting decorations to draw the eye. The tree is a real one. My worst nightmare is a plastic tree with themed impersonal decorations. The ribbon trend that’s all over insta - now that looks a bit shit.

Switchandflake · 05/12/2023 06:07

I think themed trees are a bit naff, so I said yabu. I love a tree full of ornaments that have some meaning and have been made or collected over the years. So much nicer than something that looks like you went out to the shop and just bought everything in one go.

Normal people don't have themed trees.

Only those with nothing else to do.

Work full time, 4 kids.

Have an active social life, go to the gym.

Just like things to look nice.

Not 'unreasonable' as I'm sure a lot of people do this but let's be honest, it does look extremely shit

Aren't you charming!! I know very few people who have "themed" Christmas trees, thank goodness as they look ridiculous. Some of you have no idea what Christmas is actually about - hint, it's NOT having everything picture perfect.

I'm not a fan of a themed tree, how can people afford to buy a new set of decorations each year to fit in with whatever is the newest theme on Instagram?

I hate the trend for big feathers sticking out of trees and huge bows. I love that out tree has so many memories from the year we moved in together. I'll stick with my mismatched tree that is covered with every random unmatching decoration you can think of, no matter how shit it may or may not look 😁

sep135 · 05/12/2023 06:42

I find themed trees tacky, particularly when accompanied by feathers and oversized bows. Not to mention wasteful unless you have an enormous storage space for a 10 year program of themes.

FrangipaniBlue · 05/12/2023 06:47

Halfway house here.

I have a colour scheme but not matchy matchy decorations.

So while everything is a variation of red/green/gold I don't have more than 3 of any decoration and all have been collected over the last 23 years.

What I don't like is lights where you can see how the rows run - that's just lazy 😂

MintJulia · 05/12/2023 06:50

Theme??!!? Not in my house.

Our Christmas decorations are a collection formed over the last 25 years.

Starting with some ghastly cheap baubles from B&Q when I first had my own xmas tree, and over the years buying one or two beautiful hand made ones when I see them. Now they are all glass or metalwork, or hand painted or embroidered

I've retired the cheap mass produced ones now, but the others are a sort of diary of the years. I know where each one was bought, and with whom. So the same every year, sometimes with a new addition. 😊

spellingwasp · 05/12/2023 06:50

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/12/2023 22:25

We find 'Christmas' works well as a theme.

Much better than the years we tried 'Higgs boson', 'Existential angst' or 'Memorable MPs of 1472'.

😂

jeaux90 · 05/12/2023 06:51

Theme. Do you mean colour scheme?

My tree has a colour scheme but my DD14 is into this stuff and decided the colours this year. It looks gorgeous and variation on gold, silver and white. Random baubles mind.

everybluesock · 05/12/2023 06:53

Themed trees are ugly and passé

I just remembered helping to decorate my first boyfriend's family tree. His parents had a box of decorations, some of which were made of chocolate, covered in foil and had Empire Made written on the back. God knows how old they were and never been eaten.😀

Madameprof · 05/12/2023 07:07

Back in the pre-kids days we had a blue and silver theme (thought I was oh so sophisticated shunning red and gold). So we've still got that stuff. Also had a year when we only put wooden decorations I bought abroad on it. Again very 'sophisticated' but very dull/unsparkly. Still got those too.

Since kids ours has turned into the happy mishmash others have described. My teens were still excited to hang up baubles they made at infant school. And them happy together around the tree is as Christmas as it gets for me.

Laurama91 · 05/12/2023 07:17

I dont like themes. I have what I like. They're animals, Disney and I bought 2 dinosaurs this year 😂.
