To ask how I’m supposed to pay this heating bill?

This month I put the heating on set to 18. It automatically clicks off when it’s got to 18 and it goes off entirely at 10pm until the morning. I’ve looked at usage and it says the heating has been on an average of 7 hours a day. This had meant a bill of 502 pounds. We are in a three bed detached. That is almost a quarter of my income and I have one dc in nursery, single parent. I am so worried about the coming months, is 7 hours a day average a lot? I thought I was being careful.

Have you seen the news people on Smart Meters are paying double that why it's so high

Do you have a link?

TheWorldisGoingMad · 05/12/2023 21:58

My heating is off permanently because I don't want to go into energy debt. And I don't want to pay a huge chunk of my disposable income to shareholders.

I have throws over all chairs and fluffy duvets on the sofa. Fluffy sheets, and 2 duvets on each bed and a spare.

When the house is too cold, I press the 1 hour only heating button, put a timer on my phone and turn it off after 20 minutes. The residual heats works well.

I'm a bit of a control freak and don't like the unknown. This way, I know roughly what I use month, and no nasty surprises.

I would invest in spare 13.5 tog or 15 tog duvets. It's much cheaper than using energy, and you can put them away for next year.

@FuzzyPuffling Your house will be developing horrendous damp.
It's in the terms and conditions of my home insurance that my heating remains on at least 16c from October to March to avoid damp.

It isn't.

Suggest looking at moneysavingexpert.com to compare a better rate. Don’t heat home when you’re out, obvs. Click for an hour before getting up and when back home. Electric overthrow blankets are brilliant! Snuggling in one now with heating off.

No need to swear. Many of us finding it tough

Check your insulation
How old is your boiler

downsize if you can’t afford it

Morgysmum · 06/12/2023 08:56

Not sure if will help, but the Money saving Expert Martin Lewis. Said when you have put your heating on for a full day, turn your boiler down, I think to 60.
Which should help with the cost long term, but I don't know about short term.
If you don't use a room, turn your radiator down.
We have a 3rd bedroom, which we don't use very often, so we turned it down to a 2.
At our old house, we had a old 2 bar electric fire in our living room, which we used when we had a day off. Sadly our new rental doesn't have one, so on my day off yesterday, I had a blanket on, when it got a bit chiller, we do put the heating on for a couple of hours in the morning, then a few in the evening.

I time mine from 8 am to 9.30 am and again from 6 pm to 7.30 pm. It heats up to 22° it costs me £80 a month. It gets cold by about 2 pm but I just put on extra layers and I'm under the duvet from 10 pm so I'm warm. So 3 hours a day my home stays pretty warm.

People can brag about not using heating all they want (and they do, incessantly) but heating is necessary for both the health of the house and one's own health.

Edited

There are more people who get sick now than years ago when they used to not have heating!
Lots more illnesses , my children never got ill in our very old damp house, moved to a brand new build with central heating and they were forever ill, so no, we hardly ever use the heating as there’s just no need

You can buy the equivalent of a 2 bar electric fire for about 25 quid on Amazon.

Through what mechanism do you think that central heating is making people sick and how did its arrival co-incide with a huge reduction in winter deaths if it is a detrimental health factor?

Notcontent · 06/12/2023 15:38

@Bertiesmum3 i am just curious - if you don’t use your heating, what is the temperature in your house?

Because it’s not healthy to sit in a hot house, which is why people are advised to open a window or put a bowl of water in the rooms,

There's a difference between sitting in a "hot house" and sitting in a home that's a healthy, warm temperature.
