Being indecisive about picking the right pram

Posting partly for traffic…

Option 1. Cybex Gazelle S
Option 2. Mama’s and Papa’s Ocarro

The shop assistant seemed surprised and slightly annoyed after we told him we needed to go away and have a think before placing the order! Prams are so expensive and I want to make sure we’re making the right choice.

Now I’m sat wondering which one we go for… does anyone have any experience with either of these prams?

Did you try them out in the shop?

I went for my pram because I found it really easy to collapse and it fitted nicely in my very very small car. It was pricey but I was happy to spend it as I knew I’d be able to comfortably use it. Wouldn’t have parted with the money without testing it.

Don’t let the shop assistant make you feel bad for having a think, it’s a big decision and a lot of money to part with.

Agree with others about looking second hand. Although I didn’t do this most of my mum friends did and they were all in good condition

Ohhhh I remember this minefield - it's a nightmare and overwhelming but honestly they're all very similar with pros and cons to many, your lifestyle, preferences and needs will determine which is best for you.

We went to both John Lewis and mammas & papas for their 90 minute sessions to go through prams, car seats and furniture- with John Lewis we focused on prams and car seats. They were amazingly helpful, asked about our lifestyle if this was our first and if we knew whether we might have another child (some prams can be adapted for 2 children at a later date), size of our car boot etc. mammas & papas was very disappointing and not really helpful, on leaving John Lewis we'd zoned in on the pram we liked and for what reasons and told the mammas & papas assistant to see what they had that was similar/equivalent - they didn't seem to have anything that matched.

So our things were - needed to fold daily well as our boot isn't big, it's not tiny but not big either, needed to be light enough when folded and fold easily, the basinet is safe for overnight sleeping which comes in handy when at my parents, they can sleep without worry, and when we travel to my husbands nans it means we don't need a travel cot.

I wasn't fussed on the car seat being able to go on the pram frame as we only have a 3 door but the car seat I wanted was the one that baby can lie flat in. As a bonus it can also go on the pram frame. The bonus is, this one can be adapted for an additional child at a later date (we don't know if we'll have a second, still pregnant with our first)

We chose the UPPAbaby vista v2 with the maxi-così bubble pro 360 car seat. John Lewis also give discount codes to use after you've gone home and had a think. Mammas&papas want you to order there and then which i also didn't like.

I hope this helps, no one can choose for you as it's based on what you're needs are, we didn't know what we wanted before our John Lewis visit, that helped us identify our needs.

Whatever you go for, I’d second buying preloved on fb marketplace, can get absolute bargains

Doubleespresso33 · 04/12/2023 09:15

We’re going for the gazelle S (need a double) but I like that it can also be a single. and I really liked it. I drive but also walk a lot and a decent buggy is important for me and I wanted one brand new

JanewaysBun · 04/12/2023 09:26

I got a new bugaboo cam as it was my first much awaited baby and I wanted to splash out. Nearly 6 years later and still in daily use. I could have got a second hand one but price per year has been less than £100.

If i was you i would get a vista to future proof!

exitviathegiftshop · 04/12/2023 09:30

if you are set on one of those, I recommend taking a heavy backpack to the shop and putting that in it and seeing how it steers and trying going down a step if you can - a lot get very hard to steer with a 1yo in.

jannier · 04/12/2023 09:34

Everyone I know soon swaps to a lightweight stroller about 7 months the compact ones are really good

DuploTrain · 04/12/2023 09:37

It’s a really big investment, so worth thinking about.

My tips - the car seat that comes in travel system bundles is usually rubbish (poor safety ratings and outgrown soon). So you want a base that will be compatible with other car seats later on.

I still have an Oyster 3 from my 1st DS. It’s a similar weight to the Ocarro - very heavy to lift in and out of the car.

Now expecting second DS and I’ve bought a lie-flat Cybex car seat. Weighing up buying a second hand Yoyo to go with it.

Cookiedough123 · 04/12/2023 09:42

I have the Ocarro and wish I hadn’t bothered! Waste of money! Once you’ve used the bassinet and swapped to the other bit of the pram you will want a buggy! The Ocarro is so heavy and clumsy!! Especially with the seat attached. I feel like the bassinet is perfect for when they are little newborns but as soon as you change over to the seat you realise what a PITA they are!! I wish I’d bought a really cheap pram for the bassinet and then a nice light buggy like the bugaboo fox or joolz aer. They are really lightweight!

GreatGateauxsby · 04/12/2023 09:43

Ergh it’s a minefield….

imo Both are VERY heavy.

It depends what you want - I was happy I got my nuna Demi pram second hand as we had 6-9m use and now it’s under the stairs.
it’s a great pram but soooo heavy and we have 2 steps into the house.

Cookiedough123 · 04/12/2023 09:49

Wanted to edit my post but can’t… I meant the bugaboo butterfly not fox! Haven’t tried the fox!

RB05 · 04/12/2023 09:55

We went to a store called Newbie & Me baby store and they had every make/model, which we could test drive on a track - they didn't have a pushy sales strategy. We went for the Nuna Mixx bundle set in the end, we needed something robust, but not too heavy. However, my friend got a second hand mamas & papa's one off market place, which is immaculate. I think it's all personal preference.

FraterculaArctica · 04/12/2023 09:59

This was us 10 years ago - literally in tears over which pram to choose 😂.

Bought a Baby Jogger City Mini GT. 3 kids later it's still going strong, we never bought another pram or stroller, never regretted it.

SouthLondonMum22 · 04/12/2023 09:59

It really depends on your lifestyle.

I don't have a car and regularly use public transport so that ruled out all of the popular massive ones because we wanted something lightweight and easily foldable. In the end we went with the babyzen yoyo and still use it constantly almost exactly a year later.

I'm expecting twins this time and I'm leaning towards the out n about nipper or the mountain buggy duet for the same reasons, though it is trickier with double ones.

gldd · 04/12/2023 10:02

We bought an Uppababy Cruz with every single accessory second hand on eBay for £200, then sold it again 3 years later for ... £200. Buying a pram / pushchair brand new seems utter madness to me.

showmethegin · 04/12/2023 10:56

We were very measured about new baby stuff when having DS, didn't buy a load of expensive and unnecessary stuff BUT we bought a bugaboo fox and it's a total game changer. He is 18 months and we still love it. We do have a cheap stroller thing for nursery runs but the bugaboo is a joy to push, the basket is massive and it's relatively lightweight for a big pram. Totally worth the money.

I walked miles and miles and miles with him in it for a year on maternity to lose the baby weight 😂

LemonLight · 04/12/2023 11:01

We bought the maxi cosi Adora bundle on the black Friday sales (£500) which included a car seat.
Had a really similar experience with a shop assistant after we said we needed to go away and think. She spent hours ignoring everything I said trying to get us to spend £1500 on an Egg or a Candy bundle, neither of which I liked or was willing to spend £1500 on! Puts me off when shop assistants blatantly are just trying to get you to spend money and ignore everything you say.

pastypirate · 04/12/2023 11:03

If I had another baby it would be bugaboo bee. I spent ££££££ on prams and hated them all (quinny and Phil and teds and bugaboo chameleon)
Only ones I rate are baby jogger that fold in the middle. My baby jogger was well used by friends when it was outgrown they fought over it!
