AIBU to worry about mixing cold medicines

Posting here for traffic - apologies.

I know the rules about ibuprofen, aspirin and paracetamol, but I am concerned about mixing or taking too many of other chemicals.

I have looked online but can't find any info.

In front of me I have:
Sudafed sinus tablets - Ibuprofen and Pseudoephredine hydrochloride. I took one about two hours ago
Lemsip Max - paracetamol and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride. I've just had a sachet
Mucus cough medicine - Guaifenesin. I had some about 4-6 hours ago.
General cough medicine - Cetylpryridinium Chloride, Benzoin Tincture and Capsicum Tincture. I had some last night.

I've been utterly miserable with this virus for a week and I just want it to stop 😭

Does anyone have a link to reliable information? Any experts reading?

Your best link would be to speak with a pharmacist, rather than looking on line and trying to separate the reliable from the unreliable.

l hope you get better soon.

111 can also advise

Yetmorebeanstocount · 03/12/2023 16:38

Thanks @StarlightLady . I'm too ill to go down in person to the pharmacy, and I think they are closed now anyway.

Would this question warrant ringing 111 ? I feel it would be a waste of their time.

Too much psudoephadrine?

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 03/12/2023 16:44

All your medication should contain leaflets/have info online advising contraindications/drugs not to take at the same time.

Yetmorebeanstocount · 03/12/2023 16:47

Thank you @Hankunamatata.
I have taken each medicine according to the instructions, so not too many Sudafed (which is the only one which contains it), for about 5 days on and off, so not every 6 hours.

It is the mixing of all these different remedies which concerns me. I found an NHS link saying not to take it with various other things like anti-depressants or beta-blockers, but that doesn't apply to me.

Thanks - why didn't I think of that?

The Sudafed leaflet says not to take it with phenylephrine or ephedrine, so I shouldn't have had the Lemsip!

Read the leaflet you get with each 'remedy'. It should tell you of contraindications. If the parts of your body it affects are the same, or the side effects are the same, don't take both.

I heard of someone who was hospitalised after taking paracetamol and lemsip for a few days.

DeathMetalMum · 03/12/2023 18:09

The lemisp max and Sudafed both have different decongestants in so shouldn't be taken together or in different intervals.

Don’t bother with the cough medicine, there’s no evidence that they have any effect whatsoever.
