To not really like red and green traditional Christmas decoration colours ?

Is anyone else with me ?

My H loves the red and green stuff- think home alone style.

Personally I'm all into golds / champagnes / sage green and neutral Christmas tones.

My tree has some red in it, just because he thinks it's not Christmas without red.

I'm planning to decorate my table with very little red and I want to use sage greens/ cream/ gold / champagne gold / natural / neutral stuff to decorate.

I have just ordered some napkin rings that are natural wood and have some green pine and a bit of red holly on them. I'm planning to use sage green napkins.

My H would go all out with red and green everything if it was up to him.

Decorations should have a bit of both of you. So tree can have some red and some gold.
Table decor can be be a mix of red and sage

Jumping on this thread as I am for the first time buying a fresh tree. Do I get Fir or Spruce? I like the bushy upwards looking ones with little gaps, but also a little slimmer than the traditional trees?

Totally clueless but going to tree farm and unsure where to start

It’s a little early to buy a fresh I think, best left a few more days, we usually do ours about the 10/12th we always get a spruce

when you buy it, remember they are bigger at home than in the field ! And make sure you can see it , avoid ones that are already in netting.

getting it home, unless it’s very fresh cut, trim off a little from the base, then fix onto whatever stand your having. You need one you can water, trees take a lot of watering. Then leave over night in position before decorating as it settles its branches, you will find it will do this for a few days, but you can go ahead and decorate after 12/24 hours.

watering - try and use rain water but tap is fine, and you need to check the water level every day, - treat it like a bunch of flowers. It will also like a little plant food if you have any.

we put our tree up on the 10/12 and take down on the 12th night. It always still looks lovely, yes it drops needle but I’ve never had one go bald !

I like red and green as well as your colours, but if your house is white and cream, champagne and gold decorations would look a bit dull and homogeneous to me, it needs a bit of colour, depth and contrast to stop it looking Mrs Hinchy/samey.

But what I really cannot abide is blue and purple at Christmas!

I love Christmas decorations!! I usually have 4 trees but we have a cat who sleeps in our family room so daren't put a tree in there!!

I love lots of different styles, and I started collecting my decorations in 1987. I've loads of beautiful ones from Harrods from over the years including about 20 of their mini bear resin decorations. Managed to get the 2nd last one in the store yesterday!

So, I have a traditional tree. That's the silver/red/green/gold combo. I hate tinsel and don't have it on any tree. Instead I have little mini garlands draped on them.

Then I have the 'white' tree. It's a green tree actually but the decorations are all predominantly white, and I've added clear baubles as they really catch the lights.

Incidentally all my lights are cool white. I don't like coloured or yellow white.

The tree in my living is actually a white tree, a very narrow one to fit the limited space. My decorations are teal and brown, to match my decor.

The 4th tree is a small one, and it's got red and silver.

DC1 and I did a tour of Christmas shops in London yesterday. Lots of inspiration but too many people!! Did Selfridge's, Harrods, Fortnum and Mason, Liberty, Anthropologie and John Lewis.

I love jewel colours on trees! The blues and purples are gorgeous. I'd love to ring the changes but it's all got so expensive so I have to restrain myself and anyway I love what I have.

Top tip from this year - gorgeous little red shiny hearts from Sostene Grene, costing £1.37 each!!

@redandgreenchristmas I wouldn't put up with your husband dictating everything like that! Fortunately my husband isn't interested so I can have free rein!

DisquietintheRanks · 03/12/2023 15:04

I think your colour scheme sounds nice @redandgreenchristmas, although its diametrically opposed to our own eclectic approach to Christmas decoration (eclectic being the kindest word I can fairly apply).

I try and keep everything gold and cream, with loads of green garlands. Then red berries and lots of little pops of colour look great - purple in the dining room, cinnamon in the hall. It looks really sumptuous.

DH is a red and green ‘Santa is coming!’ Kinda guy, which by the time you’ve got loads of random bits as well looks like elves have thrown up all over everything.

Dh used to put lights on the shrubs etc in our front garden. They were put up totally at random! I used to say it looked like he stood on the front doorstep and vomited lights all over the garden!!!

I really, really dislike any home Christmas trees that have any sort of colour theme.
My favourite types are ones where the decorations have been slowly collected over the years and include badly make crap made by children, gaudy chinz given by grandparents, and all sorts.
I also have full respect for the parents who don't rebalance the decorations once their kids have thrown it all on. All on one side and a foot from the bottom? Great! That's how it stays for the Christmas period!

Theoldwoman · 04/12/2023 04:37

I change it up every year. This year it’s blue, green and white.

I'm sorry but presuming you're buying new stuff each year - what a waste.

Not a waste at all, but thanks anyway.

I buy all secondhand and donate to charity shops and less fortunate those I wish to pass on.

Maybe check facts before you judge.

everybluesock · 04/12/2023 08:58

@Theoldwoman I did say 'presuming'. Glad you're not buying new. The amount of plastic waste that will all just end up in landfill just because people want a new colour coordinated Christmas each year is gross. Glad you're not adding to that.

mondaytosunday · 04/12/2023 09:29

A good friend thinks unless a decoration is directly related to Christmas or at least winter it doesn't belong on the tree - so my little deck chair ornament or Peruvian yarn dolls or glass ornament whales (to name a few) are ridiculous. She keeps saying 'but what's that got to do with Christmas'?
While our tree has everything but the kitchen sink on it, I do tend to theme the wreath/mantle/table. Last year it was Nordic white, the year before traditional red, year before peacock colours. I don't need a new set of decs I have plenty enough to do this. Perhaps you could do similar with more traditional colours on the tree but your theme elsewhere? Or compromise with deeper reds as it's his house too.

AllisColm · 04/12/2023 09:31

I like traditional and I don't change my colour scheme every year as the tree decorations are collected from decades and symbolise events in life to us. One colour I DETEST at Christmas is blue. I can't stand blue lights and to my horror a neighbour has blue lights all over the outside of their house. 😂

phoenixrosehere · 04/12/2023 09:51

*Oh god just because I said my tree and my table.

He literally makes all big design decisions in our home because if I make any, they're always wrong and I pay for it for years....

I'm including some of his stuff in the decorating, but taking the lead, for once.

I'm of sorry for it. I usually take a back seat on any permanent stuff because I don't hear the end of it otherwise.

I don't feel bad about it. In fact I said I want to have more say in our style and house generally and I'm not going to be afraid anymore. I literally told him last week*

Yikes. That’s not on. You shouldn’t be afraid or made to worry over such things.

You have at least included his ideas too, does he do that with you?

I think your colour scheme sounds beautiful and reads as a great way to incorporate both your taste and your home and sounds more Christmassy and to me than just throwing red and green everywhere.

3amShopper · 04/12/2023 12:54

My front room tree has a colour theme of gold/silver/bronze/sparkly...

...but is made up of baubles collected over years, has things my kid has made and chosen and stuff handed down from others.

It's tasteful at first glance but has all sorts on it.

People seem to think you can't have both a colour scheme and some kind of sentimental history to their bauble collection. There's stuff in it that's 12 or so years old (from when I got my own tree).

We also have the colourful tree in my DC room, it brings us joy.
