Kidney stone - husband refusing to go to hospital.

My husband went to the GP yesterday morning as he woke up peeing blood. (Or had a lot of blood in his pee, I should say). GP took a urine sample and told him to ring back if anything changed. Severe pain in his kidneys started around late afternoon plus nausea, but he hasn't actually been sick and doesn't have a temperature. Have spoken to a friend who's a GP, and they said to go to A&E to get it checked out but agreed it sounded like kidney stones. Husband says he's managing the pain and is very reluctant to go and sit in A&E for hours. AIBU to be pushing him? I've read online that there can be complications if a stone gets blocked in the ureter, including sepsis, the implications of which I fully understand. But equally, some medical websites say if you can manage the pain, then it's ok to stay at home. Does anyone have experience of kidney stones?

My dad has twice had sepsis with a stuck kidney stone. He needs to go now, before all the piss head go in later and he’s waiting all night in agony.

Blimey!
Piss heads?

Redmat · 02/12/2023 19:24

Piss heads ,people who waste valuable NHS time and money by being unable to control the amount they drink.
I've defined it for you.
Kidney stones are excruciating. He needs to check if he has them and not wait to see if it gets worse.

Precisely, thanks @Redmat . People who drink excessively and cause themselves or others harm or injury due to being inebriated. Saturday night being one of the worst times for it. I'm not sure what else it could be interpreted as. See also black eye Friday.

DH had this and was in the floor in pain which is unlike him. He ended up needing surgery for his because he had ignored earlier signs x

Tell him it's a quick blood test, urine test & CT scan to confirm or deny. He doesn't have to stay but he could get some NSAID which work quite well to help the pain.

Ask him if it's worth long term kidney issues? The lady next to me had urosepsis, it wasn't pretty. I was lucky enough to have mine removed as it was on the cusp of the cut-off size to pass naturally. Turns out it was good I did as my anatomy wouldn't have allowed passage.

Unless it's blocked he's likely to be sent home with anyhow, but it's better to be safe isn't it?

Suggest he look on the kidney stone support group UK on Facebook. Just because he's okay now doesn't mean he will be feeling that way at 3am.

Thanks everyone. He's sitting on the sofa, in pain (bad enough that he can't eat anything) but still refusing to listen. He rang 111 this afternoon who said they probably wouldn't scan him and would just send him home with painkillers, but that he should book a scan via his GP on Monday morning. I've told him about the numerous people who've had horror stories of the pain & being admitted via ambulance but he somehow thinks this doesn't apply to him. Doing my head in, but there's none so deaf.... appreciate all your responses x

I totally agree that he should go, but you can't make him. His body, his choice.

If he coped with the pain (and good on him if he did) then it will probably just pass through him. DH had several KS and only once did it turn into something more serious and he had been sent home by then. Your DP will have to look at what triggered his KS and his diet. DH upped his liquid intake significantly and it has now been several years since he had one. At one time he was having two-three KS attacks a year - he is sporty and had a tendency to be slightly dehydrated.
