To cook turkey in freezer from las Christmas?

In trying to clear out freezer, I’ve found a turkey crown from last Christmas. I’m thinking it is going to be a waste of time cooking it as it’s been there almost a year so over to you. It looks a little frosty….

YABU - bin it
YANBU - risk it and enjoy a roast

Pretty sure you can only freeze meat for up to three months…personally if it were me it would be going in the bin!

TerfTalking · 02/12/2023 06:17

I’d do it but I’d cook it long and low as it might be a bit tough. With good gravy I reckon it’s fine. And if it’s not great? Give it to the cat, dog or foxes.

squishee · 02/12/2023 06:21

My DSis did this last year, as Covid had put paid to her Christmas the year before. Was absolutely fine.

susiedaisy1912 · 02/12/2023 06:26

No, it will taste weird and be freezer burnt.

Mothership4two · 02/12/2023 06:27

We'd risk it. Just give it the sniff test once it's defrosted.

This has reminded me of a company that a family member worked at years ago that supplied very expensive high end turkeys for Christmas. The unsold turkeys would then be frozen until the following December, defrosted, and sold as 'fresh'. As far as they were aware no issues. Family member left after that first year.

AhBiscuits · 02/12/2023 06:29

That would get eaten in this house. I reckon it will be fine.

pickledandpuzzled · 02/12/2023 06:30

Honestly it will be fine. That’s what freezing is.

If it were a dodgy old freezer where the temp fluctuated a lot it may be a bit less tender, but if it’s still properly packed it’s fine.

Want to guess how long Bernard Matthew’s keeps them? I don’t!

Sauerkrautsandwich · 02/12/2023 06:33

Just cook it and then use it for other meals where you mix it in. It will most likely not be nice by itself due to freezer burns, but mixed in sauce etc it will be fine. Roast covered, then pull/chop and throw back in a freezer for adding to dishes.

Flod waste is stupid waste. Everything can be used in some way.

On standard common - 18 freezer these are recommendations for quality, not safety. Like best before dates.
It's different for freezers like freezer box in a fridge.

Behindyouiam · 02/12/2023 06:35

I'd use it.

Frenchfancy · 02/12/2023 06:35

It would depend on the freezer. If it is a proper deep freeze at -20 it will be fine. If it is a fridge freezer type maybe not.

Mothership4two · 02/12/2023 06:37

Completely beside the point of the thread, but last Christmas our supermarket fresh organic bronze turkey from Sainsburys was not good. Chewy and tasteless. I was so disappointed that over the Christmas period I bought a Lidl cheap frozen one and redid Christmas lunch and it was delicious - apparently, I'm a vegetarian. I'm going to go frozen this year and not spend a fortune.

lap90 · 02/12/2023 07:16

We would cook it too and have done similar before, all was fine...

DilemmaDelilah · 02/12/2023 09:23

I would because I hate waste. However there is a chance that it might be freezer burnt so some of it might not be edible - so I wouldn't use it for our Christmas meal, just an ordinary one.

Yes I agree I would do a Sunday roast either it but not save it for Xmas day

HauntedPencil · 02/12/2023 10:08

I'm in the defrost it and seen what you think camp.

Gt86 · 02/12/2023 10:09

I'd defrost amd use it in a curry

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/12/2023 10:11

Definitely use it but the texture might not be great so I would plan to use it for a stew/casserole/curry rather than for Christmas dinner.

pizzaHeart · 02/12/2023 10:13

Do you mean you froze it after cooking or is it a pack of shop bought turkey crown you haven’t used?

PBandJ111 · 02/12/2023 11:44

It’s an uncooked crown.

Funkyslippers · 02/12/2023 12:13

I had a fresh turkey crown I bought for a bargain price on Christmas eve in the freezer for a whole year. It was delicious the Christmas after!

Rainbowshit · 02/12/2023 12:15

I would. It'll be fine as long as adequately wrapped up in the freezer.

PBandJ111 · 11/12/2023 12:45

Update: turkey was cooked and delicious. No one was ill, so happy days!
