To wonder house sellers motives?

Looking on Zoopla last night. Houses are not selling in our area (south coast).
They only sell if it’s a gem of a house or seller not delusional on price.

I don’t usually use Zoopla (usually rightmove) and being able to see the percentage of reduction was such an eye opener for me!

So many houses discounted things like 1%, 0.5%, 3%.

I had a bit of a nosy as I just love everything property and these are often houses that should have a fair bit of equity in them?

I would completely understand if there was no equity but otherwise why??

I never knew it was so prevalent so be adamant your house is worth what you want it to be worth! I thought that was a smaller group of people!?

Im just so confused? If I wanted to move and made 300k on my house, I’d just keep chopping it down until it sold. Why does no one do that now?

Also, live in an area with a lot of asset rich boomers and older. There are so many properties on over the 1 million mark (clearly owned for decades/ 60’s decor)that the owners just won’t reduce at all!? I just don’t get it. How much money do that actually want! And why??

If you have a house that’s been on the market for over 4 months, has made you plenty of money and you refuse to reduce or have reduced by less than 5% can you explain to me why please?

PianPianPiano - I don’t but I can look at how much they should have. That’s why im asking on here. Anyone want to come forward and say it may look like they’ve got 1 million equity but they’ve remortgaged it all away?? Because that’s what I was looking for. People to come in and explain why but the only answers I’ve got are “because I deserve all the money” 😂

im sure you do…. But will you get it? No

But why does that bother you?

sugarandsweetener · 01/12/2023 17:04

ok…. now i will hide and bow out! 😂

96waystobehappy · 01/12/2023 17:07

@Fartooold

Ok I understand that but I never mentioned anywhere that it was “greedy”. It’s not greedy. I too want as much money as I can get for what ever I sell. However, if I was selling now in your situation I’d probably sell and go into rented personally. That’s if I knew I had to move sometime soon. If not I’d probably just do what you’re doing and except that may leave my stuck there.

It's accept and me!

Not except and my.

@eyeslikebutterflies

Insane. How can you think a person talking in the internet is insulting you personally. I never said boomers were greedy. I never said anyone was greedy.
Stop being so dramatic. I don’t need your life story because I never said all boomers were rich!!

In my area there are a lot of ASSET rich people over 70. That’s a fact, not a personal insult to anyone 🙄

I never said it was greedy to want top price. I never said it was silly to try and get to price.

Hang on, so what you wanted from this thread was a series of shame-faced confessions about why people had zero equity in their apparently expensive houses, hence they couldn't drop prices? With a side order of congratulations for you on being mortgage free?

Next time maybe be a bit more direct and call your thread 'CONGRATULATE ME ON MY GOOD PROPERTY DECISIONS AND SELF-LACERATE ABOUT YOUR FAILURES'?

Op are you ok? You come across as angry and goady. Honestly I’d have assumed you’re someone who has never been able to buy and is pissed off people have made money on property.

SuperBored · 01/12/2023 17:18

@96waystobehappy are you sure you are 45? Just to quote some of the things you have said about other posts

"Insane. How can you think a person talking in the internet is insulting you personally...."

"Stop being so dramatic. I don’t need your life story..."

And yet you had to tell us your life story and appear that you are insulted 😂😂😂😂

LittleGreenDragons · 01/12/2023 17:19

I detest the word "boomers" as it can be a derogatory phrase. Same as using old crank.

The question I’m asking is: Do you not understand that (if you live in my area) that you are very, very unlikely to sell in that area and that it’s getting very very likely that if you carry on being so stubborn you may end up getting a lot less than if you just priced it at a sensible price now?
Do you not understand that some people are not desperate to sell so can wait until someone offers a higher price. Some people need all the equity to pay care home fees, pay the ex spouse, pay off the endowment mortgage that never covered the final bit, putting grandchildrenthrough university or giving them a help up the housing ladder. All sorts of reasons.

Quite honestly I don't understand why you care so much considering you are now mortgage free after your third house. Enjoy being out of the housing scramble.

RudsyFarmer · 01/12/2023 17:20

There are houses locally that have been for sale for over a year. Some nearly two years. At this point my assumption is the owners of these houses don’t want to move anytime soon.

jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 17:20

Loads of people have a set price in their head of what their house is worth. One near me has been for sale since 2021! It was overpriced then, now reduced by 100k & still overpriced.

96waystobehappy · 01/12/2023 17:22

Op are you ok? You come across as angry and goady. Honestly I’d have assumed you’re someone who has never been able to buy and is pissed off people have made money on property.

I just find it so annoying that you can’t ask a basic fucking question these days without people getting insulted.

If you’re not someone selling their house at the moment then don’t answer.

Every single thread on mumsnet gets derailed by know it alls and “are you sure you’re alright” “are you on crack hun”

Just answer the questions you have knowledge on. That’s what forums used to me. Now their are just full of people asserting their superiority other others.

Just answer the question.

OP posts:
jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 17:22

And some will wait years to achieve that price which doesn’t make sense to me but their life.

LittleGreenDragons · 01/12/2023 17:24

Is your basic question the same as your title? - To wonder house sellers motives?

Because there are 100s of reasons, some of which have been posted.

SausagePastaForTea · 01/12/2023 17:24

I love it when the OP gets a little bit feisty.

jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 17:27

On wider point it's just so bad for the economy that so many people's wealth is tied up in their homes. I'm early thirties and homeowner - feel very lucky and our house has accrued equity which is good but on balance I'd rather have better wages than higher house prices.

This 100%. Working should pay not housing, it’s one reason our economy has shocking productivity

jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 17:28

@96waystobehappy your post has the obviously triggered some peeps! 😆

SuperBored · 01/12/2023 17:30

96waystobehappy · 01/12/2023 16:28

@ActDottie since when did people find the perfect oneard property before they attempt to sell? Seems a crazy strategy in a market where houses are not selling.

I would only put my house on the market if there was a particular property I want, a lot of people don’t ‘need’ to move house they only want to move if a particular property they like comes up for sale, I’m amazed you don’t realise this.

jesterdourt · 01/12/2023 17:37

with a lot of asset rich boomers and older.

You jumped the shark here OP. Damn those pesky old people holding on to their homes instead of rolling over and giving their houses away.

Yeah - bastards eh?
