Not to open door?

Home alone and doorbell rang a few minutes ago. Saw on camera two men poking around on the drive. When they saw the camera they waved. They have driven off now and I feel a tad anxious. Damn it I have an early start and can't imagine getting back to sleep. Have a photo of man at door / could share?

He doesn't look unkempt

Haggisfish3 · 01/12/2023 00:11

I think if they were up to no good they wouldn’t show faces. Probably wrong house.

JellyIegs · 01/12/2023 00:13

It would give me a scare as well but I think they have probably just come to the wrong house. They know you have the camera now anyway!

halfthesun · 01/12/2023 00:14

I think wrong house too .... house was all in darkness but I have popped lights on just in case ... hmmmm not happy though ...

Thank you for reassuring...if it was the police do you think they would show badge : ID to the camera?

I agree that they’ve probably came to the wrong house but can easily imagine your scare. I would be awake the whole night after that. You were not unreasonable not to open the door, I wouldn’t, I would open a window and shout from upstairs

Deathbyfluffy · 01/12/2023 00:20

If it was something important, police would be a lot more persistent.
Probsbly wrong address - I agreed to collect a sofa around 11pm from a guy on Gumtree and he managed to mistype the house number.
Cue a very upset neighbour who was determined I was trying to break in (despite ringing the doorbell…)

Police tell you they're police.
I would be very unsettled by two strange men poking round my drive and waving at the camera. I'd probably call the police in case they're known door to door scammers.

MsInsomniac · 01/12/2023 00:23

Could they be deliveroo or something like that at wrong house?

Blankspace4 · 01/12/2023 00:25

Can you not speak to them via the ring doorbell that’s got the camera?

I wouldn’t have answered either at night and on my own if I wasn’t expecting anyone so you’ve done nothing wrong

no chance you’ve left your car lights on or something like that and they’re trying to be good Samaritans?

halfthesun · 01/12/2023 00:33

I was too sleepy to react properly and talk to them via doorbell. Lights not on the cars but a good thought. Hmmm not sure if I should bother police. Have popped photo on neighbourhood WA chat. Have a photo of both of them. Wish I could share audio as I think speaking a foreign language.

Neighbourhood chat a good call. Who knows what they were about but you’re better off staying safe

Time to sleep. Have messaged DH who is on a flight home from Mexico so will get message in about 12 hours ... thank you again Daffodil

penjil · 01/12/2023 02:06

Probably not delivering food at 23.45hrs, plus usually only 1 person does that, not 2, and they usually have a bag of food with them!

WYorkshireRose · 01/12/2023 02:16

Would be careful randomly posting people's pictures on an online forum OP. That's their personal data and using it for your own private, domestic purposes is fine, but posting it publicly could get you in hot water.

Why message your husband?

halfthesun · 01/12/2023 03:34

Guess I felt very alone and wanted to. Still do .... plus now need to ask for photo to be removed. Up in three hours to teach my students .... feeling pretty awful.

Hmmm how do we contact Mumsnet?

OP posts:
octoberfarm · 01/12/2023 03:37

If you're on the app, you can swipe left on your own post, click "report", and then ask them to remove the photo.

Was half hoping a MNer might pop on and be like "oh, that's my Dave!" 🤣 Sprry you're feeling worried, OP, that would have put me on edge too. Hope you get some sleep Flowers

People post pictures of individuals on the next door app all the time where I live. They are usually of people stealing parcels or cars. If you are poking around on someone's drive late at night it is your own fault if your photo appears online.

Just because people do it all the time doesn't mean it's ok to do. OP is posting on an open forum implying that someone has (probably) been up to no good, alongside their actual picture. That's bordering on slanderous and it's just not worth the risk.

FictionalCharacter · 01/12/2023 10:10

Why be worried about "bothering" the police? These people might be criminals and the police might have had other reports about the same men. The police will decide whether to investigate. It's their job. If they're not concerned, they won't do anything.
