Advent calendars (lighthearted)

SephrinaX · 30/11/2023 20:30

At the ripe old ages of 38 and 36, my mum has decided that my sister and I are 'too old' for her to buy us advent calendars.

Our argument is that we are her children and it is her parental duty to provide us with them still.

Who is BU?

Your mum is being unreasonable. Massively

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 30/11/2023 20:31

Clearly your mum is! I'm 47 and my mum still gets me one 😂

PurBal · 30/11/2023 20:31

Sorry OP, I had to ask mum to stop after I got married. It just became weird. ETA because you can’t share one chocolate between 2.

My dad bought me a rum advent calendar last year and a cheese one this year. Both shareable. 😉

FloofCloud · 30/11/2023 20:32

I want a wine bottle one! ... alas I doubt my DH will get me one 😣
DS has a Lego one - he's going to explode with joy when he sees it tomorrow 🥰🤩

Deathwillbebutapause · 30/11/2023 20:32

Your mother hates you.

WashItTomorrow · 30/11/2023 20:33

I get an advent calendar for my mum. She doesn’t get me one, and hasn’t since I was a child/ teen. Just the traditional cardboard ones.

StarlightLime · 30/11/2023 20:33

She's been buying you one for the past 38 years?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/11/2023 20:34

Beyond unreasonable. Ltb.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 30/11/2023 20:35

Maybe she is hinting that you should get her one 😉

Of course!

Although she said something the other day about advent calendars (chocolate ones) not actually being a thing until the mid 90s. I could have sworn they were about when I was little.

She's actually intolerant to chocolate. Perhaps spite is the reason she won't buy me one?

Hahaha. I still get my mum and dad one every year and they are in their late 60s. They don't get me one, but they get the grandkids them.
I always get my husband a grinch one.

Our class defo had a choc one at primary and we all took turns to open it, that would've been 93? Wonder if it sticks out because it was the first choc one I'd had?

Oh your mum is been vvvvvvu btw.

Edited

We only had one advent calendar between four as children - it's perfectly possible to share! (Obviously we didn't get even a share once we left home.)

Ethelswith · 30/11/2023 20:42

It was a bittersweet moment when (my now frail) DMum stopped buying me an Advent Candle, and I started getting her an Advent Calendar

Tiamaria86 · 30/11/2023 20:43

Omg I'm 37, is this my last year getting one? 😳

ShowOfHands · 30/11/2023 20:44

I'm 42 and my Mum still gets me one. I get her one too.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 30/11/2023 20:46

Yes they’ve been around for ages, we’ll before the ‘90s

I started doing the refillable ones with my Godson and God Daughter. Not to brag but they were EPIC They were equal parts fun to put together and a pain in the butt. So we did them until the youngest turned 18. The first Grand Godbaby was just born so we have a few years until they get their first on. So I’ve a few blissful but boring years of being free from them.

I almost caved when the god kids asked for them this summer. I may do a Christmas stocking to them instead but haven’t promised anything.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 30/11/2023 20:47

You know you can divorce your parents, right? Get a shit hot lawyer and they'll get you enough alimony to keep you in advent calendars the rest of your life.

HoHoHoliday · 30/11/2023 20:48

I'm mid 40s. My mum buys me two every year - one with christmassy pictures and one with chocolate. Never too old!
I did once tell her she needn't bother if she didn't want to, although I love them, and she said she enjoys getting them.

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 30/11/2023 20:51

I posted my DS his advent calendar yesterday, he's 24.
I hope his flatmates don't take the mick 😁

Paperdove87 · 30/11/2023 20:57

I'm 36 and my mum still fills me a wooden one. Blush she only started it after^^ I left home as well. I never get it till at least the 5th though as she never fills it in time.

AdaColeman · 30/11/2023 21:02

Your Mum is being unreasonable, and failing in her maternal duty.

Tell her you want the Bonne Maman jam one, she's just got time to get you one!
