Can anyone explain a Nintendo switch to somebody pathetically out of touch with technology!

Have been thinking of getting DC (5&6) some type of gaming device for Christmas as they keep mentioning lots of their friends play them etc.

This isn't a debate on getting technology for them I just have absolutely no idea what I'm getting as I'm rubbish with tech!

Originally I was going to get them a console each but I don't know if I'm wasting my money as they've never had one before and it might be quite a while before they get used to working it. Also they are ridiculously expensive if they don't end up using them!

So my main question is could they play a multiplayer game like Mario on it at the same time? I know I can plug it in to the telly to do that but can they do it without using the telly too?

Did you ever have a sega game gear? It's that but modern, has a touch screen connects to the TV and the internet

And yes you can multiplayer on it.

its both. You can hold it and play it one player, or plug it into the telly and play it up to four players. You can also technically put the little screen built into it onto the table and play it multiplayer like that, which could work for travelling etc.

it’s fun and it’s age appropriate for your kids i would say.

I doubt that they'd be happy with the small screen on a two player game. You'd know that better though.

Wakeywake · 30/11/2023 17:32

The screen is small, so difficult for 2 players to play at the same time unless connected to the TV. But technically it is possible.

Switch can be played as a handheld console for 1 player with the 2 controllers either side of the screen.
Or the controllers can slide off and be used remotely when the switch console screen is being displayed on a TV screen. This mode can be used for 2 player games and Mario Kart is one of them.

There are probably some tutorials showing this on YouTube but feel free to ask some more questions if there's anything specific?

Prepare yourself for the massive arguments that will ensue as a result op. Delay for as long as you can is my advice.

All I fucking hear in my house is bickering about who's turn it is and arguments about which game to play who's had the most time and TEARS so many tears.

I am sick to death of the fucking thing. We've caved and bought a console so they can fuck off into separate rooms and leave us alone!

Our kids love theirs! We have a switch lite, and then got a "normal" switch too, so they can play on the big screen together. They rarely argue over it, as lots of multiplayer games like mario kart, toads adventures, mario party, etc available, and when we go for long drives, they take both switches and play one each. They have their own animal crossing islands and play together, visit eachother and their friends on that. I don't really have a clue about much of it, but they both love it, and we have extra controllers so sometimes have a family game of mario kart etc. My 6 year old can play most of the games easily.

I love, love our switch. It has a parental mode which enables you to set time limits to help with the 'my turn' problem. Also play it yourself, play as a family - also helps with feeling of ownership issues. Only buy games with co-op modes. Treat it same way as you treat your TV - I'm assuming thats a family amenity and you have some kind of limits on it.
