Heating on constantly. Help!

WinteryWonderland · 30/11/2023 08:13

We had a new boiler last year and it's situated in the loft.
I understand frost protection etc but
now the cold snap has hit, the heating seems to be running constantly by itself 😳
The thermostat says 18 and its warm in the house. I lowered to 16, and the heating is still on 😧
Is it going to just stay on constantly during cold snaps?? That can't be right surely?
I want to use the log burner today to save on heating bills - but the heating just isn't going off.
Does anyone know? Is it frost protection/bcus boiler is in loft? I can't afford for the heating to be on constantly like this. Can anyone help?

Do you have a timer for the heating going on and off? Has it been changed to 24 hours by mistake?

It's set to 14 overnight and 18 from 6am.
I then lower it in the day to 16 if I'm going out.

I can help if you tell me a bit more about this new boiler. Can you tell me the make and model?

user701 · 30/11/2023 08:21

It’s on because the house is cooler than the temperature you d set on your thermostat and your boiler is set to come on whenever that happens

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/11/2023 08:23

It's coming on because it's lower than 18,you need to set it much lower if you don't want it come on automatically. Ours is set at 12 and coming on in the mornings.

savoycabbage · 30/11/2023 08:24

I'd just keep turning it down until you find out what temperature it goes off at.

Ours is set to nine when we don't want it on.

thismummydrinksgin · 30/11/2023 08:26

You could get a plumber in, our heating was stuck on like this and it was a valve .

I'd try turning it right down before getting a plumber in.

'My heating is on because I've turned it on'.

TheWetBandits · 30/11/2023 08:31

Hmmm OP has said she's set it to 16 and it's still on. I don't know many houses that wouldn't warm to above 16 with heating on

What new boiler do you have OP and do you have a schedule for time as well as temp? Eg mine has a temp setting but if I set it to 'on' then regardless of the temp I set, the heating will be on

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 30/11/2023 08:31

Unless your boiler is faulty and/or not communicating with the thermostat - wherever your thermostat is situated is getting colder than the set temperature. Turn it down in degrees/half degrees until you're comfortable. It will probably take a while to get right.

If it's a movable thermostat you could play around with moving it to another spot. Historically they're put in the coldest place in the house like the hallway.

Gloria42 · 30/11/2023 08:34

We had this with our new boiler. The frost protector has its own thermostat to protect the pipes and as our boiler was also situated in the loft it was cold enough to trigger the frost protection. To stop the heating coming on all the time we got that thermostat deactivated

Prettypaisleyslippers · 30/11/2023 08:37

Have you got an off button on thermostat? Our has Auyo - where you set temperature (lowest setting is 14) and if you press Off it’s sets to a minimum of 5c

WinteryWonderland · 30/11/2023 08:19

The frost setting is usually 5 degrees. It won't be having an impact as you have your thermostat set much higher than that day and night.

You have your thermostat set to 14 overnight and 18 during the day, so that is why the heating is on. Our house was 11.5 degrees this morning - so if we had those settings on our thermostat, then our heating would be on constantly too. We have it off overnight, and put it on to 18 as needed during the day.

If you want your heating off more often, then set it to 5 overnight and say 14 during the day. Then boost as needed by turning it up to 18 as and when you need it. You'll save fuel, but obviously, your house will be colder than it currently is.

If your loft is insulated what Gloria42 mentioned could be the problem.
My loft is well insulated , is like an ice box in the winter and a sauna in the summer

eatdrinkandbemerry · 30/11/2023 08:58

You just need to turn the thermostat down to say 8 then it won't keep firing up.

mrsm43s · 30/11/2023 09:07

OP what is the temperature in the house? If it's not going above 14 at night and 18 during the day, then it is simply the thermostat doing what it is supposed to be doing. If the house is heating to above 14 at night and above 18 during the day then that suggests there is a problem.

Honestly, in this weather, with those thermostat settings, I'd expect the heating to be on pretty much constantly. Since you say it's happened since the cold snap, then I think it's just due to the weather v your chosen thermostat temperatures. In my area in the mild south it's -3 degrees overnight tonight, and a max of 5 degrees during the day. So if I wanted it 14 overnight and 18 during the day, of course the heating would be on constantly.

StillWantingADog · 30/11/2023 09:09

Have you not god a manual switch on/off switch ?

SomeCatFromJapan · 30/11/2023 09:13

Yes, second this, we had the same issue. A valve got stuck so it kept calling the hot water setting.
It could well be some sort of frost protection setting given the weather the boiler location, but my boiler is in the garage which will be colder than a loft, and doesn't run continuously regardless of how cold it is.
Given fuel prices, it's worth making sure this isn't an error.

Signalbox · 30/11/2023 09:22

When it’s this cold we have to set our thermostat to 12 degrees at night if we don’t want the heating to come on and 14 degrees in the daytime. Currently the temperature in my kitchen is 15.5 degrees. If I was to set the thermostat for 18 degrees the heating would probably stay on all day.

WinteryWonderland · 30/11/2023 09:32

I've altered the day temperature to 12 degrees. Thermostat is showing the house is 18 currently and the heating is still on. It's roasting! Surely it should only come on if the house drops below 12?

Mine can take half a day to reach 16! Currently 11 in my bedroom…

Yes it shouldn’t be on in that case unless the settings have been changed to be automatic rather than manual. Unfortunately I think you will need to get someone to look at it

AliceMcK · 30/11/2023 09:38

Can you just not set a timer for it to come on? Ours comes on at 6am for an hour then again at 6pm. If we want it on during the day we just boost it for an hour. We never bother with the thermostat as temperatures vary in different parts of the house and we leave windows open all day and the back door for the dog. We are in the North so it’s always bloody cold, the heating would be on constantly if we relied on a thermostat setting.

On really bad frost nights we will set the heating and water to come on for an hour around 1am.

SomeCatFromJapan · 30/11/2023 09:40

OP just get someone out. Either there's a fault or it's not set up correctly and you don't know how to adjust it.

ladyofshertonabbas · 30/11/2023 09:43

Do you have a frost protection sensor somewhere? We did. A small box in loft. Got ours disconnected for this reason.
