To return online shopping items if the box looks 'battered'

Sorry. Im not sure if its the correct word, 'battered', but recent i order so many items which arrive looking damaged or maybe they were opened by other customers and returned to the warehouse.or maybe the staff are throwing the boxes around?

When i go to a shop i dont choose an item which has been badly treated. But online sellers dont mind selling things in poor condition.

Am i wrong to automaticly return them?

( I cant give battered presents at christmas)

Personally I wouldn’t mind receiving a present in a battered box. Seems pretty wasteful to be sending stuff back and forth (and perhaps to landfill) just because of the box. If you’re worried they’ll think you got it off a skip, just apologise for the box and say it came like that.

Even though I agree the sellers aren’t meeting expectations here.

I did this twice with an item from Amazon, the item was sent in a box that was too small so the product's box was crushed. Requested a replacement; stating why. Same thing happened with the replacement.

It was a gift so cancelled the order and found it elsewhere.

I think for me, it would depend what the item was and how important the packaging was to the gift.

It was a bottle of expensive perfume, then yes, I'd absolutely send it back if the box was bashed up. Something like that should have pristine packaging and a lot of people would keep the box.

If it was something like a food-mixer or a Hoover or a mug or something, I wouldn't be bothered if the box was a bit battered provided the item inside was still in good condition. Obviously we're talking battered within reason, though - eg a dent or a bashed-in corner or a few scuffs of the kind you'd expect a package could acquire during loading and delivery. If it was absolutely wrecked and falling apart or looked like it had been used or left sitting on a shelf to fade and disintegrate for two years, that would be different and I'd send that back.

But if its obviously the item had a 'previous life', was opened then quickly put pack. We purchased brio recently on black friday and it arrived with the cornered scratched up and the 'base' of the box not correctly closed (so definately not how it left the factory) , we ordered a popup book which had a massive dent in the cover and today we received an item of john lewis and you can see it had 'previous life' and the cardboard tabs are closed correctly.

Btw, i dont mean the delivery book,,but the actual packaging which is part of the product.

I can't say I'd give a shit about the box/packaging. I'd be more pleased that a company wasn't reboxing returned items aka destroying the environment with more pointless cardboard and plastic.

Zebedee55 · 29/11/2023 17:59

If the product is ok, I wouldn't worry.

easylikeasundaymorn · 29/11/2023 18:11

if it was for me and the item was otherwise fine I wouldn't care

If it was for a present it would depend who for and the level of damage - tabs not being fully closed wouldn't bother me. A slight bash on a lego box for a kid - kid won't notice or care. I

However if it was a perfume box for a friend then yeah I wouldn't want to give that.

I once got a hand mixer from amazon which a) didn't work and b) was still covered in mix from the last person who'd used it 🤮

flowerygloves · 29/11/2023 18:17

Tbh if it were a gift and I didn't want to open it and check the item was ok then yes I'd ask for a replacement.

PeloMom · 29/11/2023 18:46

I see that more and more and is very annoying. Especially if I buy for a gift. Either way, I expect everything to be in pristine condition and packaging.

Hankunamatata · 29/11/2023 18:50

As long as its not for a present or product is damaged then nope I couldn't care about the packaging
