Second hand dishwasher

Aibu to consider buying a second hand dishwasher? OH wants us to buy new but the better rated energy ones are in excess of £400+ and considering it will only be used once a day it seem excessive seeing as I could get a used one for less than half the price
OH thinks it’s grim to buy a used dishwasher but I don’t see the issue in it?
Any preference on brand from personal experience?

Honestly? Buy new if you can afford to. Life’s too short to argue over new Vs secondhand if you can afford the new one.

I'd not buy a second hand one. I usually only use mine once a day but I'd like it to work as long as possible. The dishwasher js a priority appliance for me as I detest washing up!

If you buy second hand appliances to my mind someone has already used the first let's say 500 uses so I'll get less life out of it, and who knows if they didn't run it 4 times a day! If you can afford it personally I'd buy new. Also I don't know anyone who gets rid of their appliances with life left in them, usually they're run into the ground before being replaced.

I wouldn't have any objections on grounds of second hand uncleanliness as by definition it's an appliance that cleans itself every time 😃

I've got a slimline Bosch, good sturdy brand and I love it, was about £400.

I buy most of my white goods second hand.
i had one issue with one dishwasher dh found, and the seller refunded. I try to buy them from refurbishers / tradesman who fit them so sell the old one. That way you know they are ok.
It’s amazing how new things are when people get rid of them.

App13 · 29/11/2023 07:47

I bought a 2nd hand dishwasher in 2005, kept it until 2022. Worked a dream , was a bosch.
I think it depends on brand, you can do a deep clean yourself.

ohtowinthelottery · 29/11/2023 08:10

Depends on the make. As the owner of an 8 year old Siemens dishwasher which has been repaired a number of times, my repair guy has told me that the cheap brands are designed not to be repaired and end up in landfill much quicker as they often have plastic interiors which melt if there's a fault and parts that can't be accessed.

NotSorry · 29/11/2023 08:13

My old dishwasher lasted a good 15 years - I’d buy new if you can stretch to it

MasterOfOne · 29/11/2023 08:16

I'd buy new simply for the warranty if anything goes wrong they will repair/replace it.

bungletru · 29/11/2023 08:16

We sold ours as we were moving house and it was in great condition - we now have to use a second hand one as it’s integrated into the kitchen

just give it a hot wash and clean before using !

Missingthegore · 29/11/2023 08:24

If you are going to buy refurbished not from market place as is likely got a reason why it's not working.

When I rang my plumber to fix my 10yr washer he advised that a new mid range machine would be cheaper than repairing mine....it went to the recycler.

Nothing wrong with a second had dishwasher. Just run a hot cycle and a wipe of the outside and your fine....does your DH know where restaurant plates are washed?

Catza · 29/11/2023 08:42

We adopted a second hand dishwasher (my partner's clients were going to throw it away when they were refurbishing their kitchen) and it worked a charm. When we sold the house, we left it behind and as far as I know people who bought the house are still using it.

StillWantingADog · 29/11/2023 08:47

If it’s a solid make and on sale for a good price I’d consider it, certainly above a
cheaper new one. As pp said most cheaper dishwashers are designed to be replaced and not repaired. It’s an absolute travesty!

I have sold a couple of used dishwashers in the past but for quite cheap eg £20.
I dont think there is a good second hand market for appliances sadly

if you can afford it though the best thing is to buy a new energy efficient one that would cost less to run and hopefully last several years. We had a 1988 Aeg dishwasher until just a few year ago. Got the engineer out to fix about twice but basically it ran for over three decades. In the exact words of the engineer “they don’t make them like this anymore”

Jarstastic · 29/11/2023 09:00

I think we all effectively buy a second hand dishwasher when we move into a house (rented or owned) where we use the previous owners dishwashers. Unless everyone is ripping out to replace immediately but I don’t know many who do IRL!

I’ve sold a dishwasher when during lockdown we had bought an extra freestanding dishwasher but then moved to a rental and were storing it then realised new house purchase would take longer than we thought. We sold it for a really good price but it was a Siemens with more than 4 years left on the warranty. Still the people who bought it got a really good deal.

StarlightLady · 29/11/2023 09:51

People always sell things for a reason, some are good reasons others are not. In the second hand market, it’s a gamble. Some fools buy, some fools sell, but not everyone is a fool!

StarlightLady · 29/11/2023 09:54

To add, even if you buy 2nd hand on a machine under the original guarantee, not all guaranties are transferable from the original purchaser and you might have to present ID.

PortalooSunset · 29/11/2023 10:24

We bought a new one when we moved into our old house. Several issues and parts needed replacing over the years. When we moved to our current house there was only room for a slimline one. Didn't have the budget for brand new. Bought a second hand Bosch (was less than a year old iirc) and we're now 6 years on with no issues at all.

TeaAndStrumpets · 29/11/2023 10:43

It depends on your budget, and if you can afford to lose the money if your £50 gumtree bargain goes wrong. If it lasts a few years you are winning. I agree with previous posters a machine filled with scalding hot water daily will be pretty clean.

If you really would prefer a new appliance, there are places which sell "graded" new appliances. These are ones with a slight blemish, dent or scuff. If it's somewhere like the side of a dishwasher you would never see it. Appliances Online sell graded items, also customer returns which have been checked over and are like new. They give a normal guarantee. Even Miele sell discounted machines like this.

cazcaz2 · 24/03/2024 13:49

Depends largely on why they get rid of it.If its just an upgrade for a bigger one then fine- but i'd want to see other in situ- you dont want to get stuck with a dodgy leaky one which has wasted your money plus landed you with a repair bill!- maybe if you got it from a relative would be fine? Or a fully refurbished one from a retailer?

JMSA · 24/03/2024 13:54

I once bought a secondhand dishwasher. It lasted for years.
