Ds age 18 signing on the dole

Breadhead1 · 28/11/2023 20:20

Ds will be 18 and when he finishes school is thinking of signing on the dole and then joining a course to keep the training allowance money. I'm not in UK.
From what I've read if you are already on the dole, to get people back into work they pay them an allowance to do a course and then hopefully they will get a job afterwards.
I think he should do the course (course would be free) and then work at the weekends. He thinks he'd be stupid to sit next to someone getting paid to do the same course, aibu?

What guarantee is there of him getting weekend work? How much money does he need?

Honestly I did the same in the distant past, signed up for the dole the minute I was out of classes. First income I ever had.

tescocreditcard · 28/11/2023 20:25

keep the training allowance money? What training allowance money?

YouJustDoYou · 28/11/2023 20:26

That;s really fucking lazy and shamefull.

Breadhead1 · 28/11/2023 20:26

So if you are on the dole it changes to a training allowance which is basically the same amount of money. To encourage people back to work I suppose

To get benefits he'll need to be showing he's spending 35 hours a week looking for employment, and attending every interview he can get, unless he's disabled and unable to work due to it.
Have you possibly got confused and mean you want him to sign up as an apprentice so he is paid rather than doing an unpaid college course?

alltoomuchrightnow · 28/11/2023 20:28

Which country? I mean, 'on the dole' isn't really the term any more. If he's not sick, he's a job seeker...and has to prove he's looking for work, but what training allowance? (obviously I don't know how it differs in non UK countries)

megletthesecond · 28/11/2023 20:28

Are you sure you aren't stuck in the 1980's?

MissAmbrosia · 28/11/2023 20:28

Saying where you are would help. If not in Uk how is anyone supposed to give any advice?

Canonlythinkofthisone · 28/11/2023 20:30

You don't just get to walk out of school and onto benefits.
(Unless you have a child I assume).

He'll need to prove actual job hunting, alongside actually completing a course.
If he neither attends the course, not shows willing to take any paid work, he will be sanctioned.

The alternative I suppose. Is to get a job and become a contributing member of society....

I think someone's winding you up love.

Sorry! posted on wrong one - ignore the above.

There's no such thing as dole or a training allowance in the UK....

What training course is he thinking of doing?

OneTC · 28/11/2023 20:38

If whatever the scheme you're talking about is available then it makes sense to use it

raven0007 · 28/11/2023 20:43

It would be Universal Credit, 'on the dole' is a slang term not used so much these days. UC won't pay if he's in full time education or training, but after a certain amount of time they will send him on courses - think SIA security licences etc - but until that time they will expect him to look for work, and prove it and attend interviews, if he's not from this country he'd have to prove he has settled status.

Whatthefnow · 28/11/2023 20:49

Are you in Ireland

DidiAskYouThough · 28/11/2023 20:49

It’s great how people didn’t even bother to read till the second sentence of the OP which says

‘I’m not in the UK’

Shpeech · 28/11/2023 20:52

Sounds very much like Ireland alright. Even the being paid to do a course type thing. There's loads of weekend jobs, depending where your are, rural or city. Both have widespread job vacancies.
Not sure if he's being influenced by friends or if he's just lazy, but if he's not going to do a college course, then he needs to get a gov course and work weekends or full time.

Quite.

I can absolutely see where your son is coming from @Breadhead1 . But then as a parent of a teen who isn't looking for a job because he's doing a course that the job centre have told him replaces his need to job search... I agree with you. Its infuriating. He could definitely work alongside the course. Bloody kids.

Breadhead1 · 28/11/2023 21:01

Yes it's Ireland and you're right it's not the dole it's job seekers apologies.

It says "I'm not in the uk" not "we're not in the uk". Looked like an explanation for her not having a solid understanding of the system. Though agree it could mean neither are and she's just asking on a uk based site for moral opinions.

Livelovebehappy · 28/11/2023 21:02

I’m guessing you’ve just worded it poorly. But if it is a training allowance, which he’s claiming instead of job seekers, then good for him. If though he’s thinking of claiming both, I think he’ll find they’ll absolutely know if he is, and assume the government pay the training payments as well as his jobseekers, so obviously (you’d hope!), it would be a none starter.

Breadhead1 · 28/11/2023 21:06

@Livelovebehappy maybe I did word it poorly. To get the training allowance you have to first be on a job seekers payment. I think he should just be grateful the course is free for the year and not be trying to get a training allowance or job seekers payment on top of that.

OP posts:
Breadhead1 · 28/11/2023 21:09

@Terfosaurus exactly!
I don't want him to start off with benefits, I know people that just keep doing courses to keep the payments with no intention of getting a job.
