Alarm HELP!

CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 12:33

Posting for traffic!

Had a power cut in the night, all sorted but now our home alarm goes off every time I turn the power back on!

What do I do?!

I’ve reset it and it lasts a second then goes off again. With the power off the main alarm stops but the box under the stairs is still beeping away!

What make and model is it? How old?

CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 12:37

Sorry, it’s a Veritas - not sure if the model and lord knows how old! We didn’t get it installed.

Try Googling the make and model to see how to reset it back to factory settings. My alarm beeps after the power is switched off as it thinks a burglar has tampered with it! I have to reset it by putting in the code and then pressing the function button twice to silence it, just inputting the number as I normally do when entering the house does not work. I don’t have a manual for it but found one online.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 28/11/2023 12:58

Sledgehammer.

tanstaafl · 28/11/2023 13:01

To clarify, you mean the outside bell or siren is sounding or just the control panel beeping ?

if it’s the outside siren, what happen if you enter the code?

CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 13:44

Both @tanstaafl and nothing happens when the code is entered so I’ve had to turn all the power off. When it’s off the control panel beeps for about 10 minutes then stops.

I’ve had a look @Ihateslugs I think I’ve found one but it’s like reading war and peace!

I think you have a battery issue.

There is a backup battery in the control panel to run the system for a few hours in the event of power failures. These batteries, though rechargeable have a limited life span. The battery may have been on its last legs and the power cut has finally killed it. The panel (should) be indicating the issue but Veritas is not a control panel I'm familiar with.

If you take the cover off of the panel you'll see the battery. You will probably find a 12v 7AH battery. These are available from Screwfix etc. Very easy to replace.

Back in the day I'd write the install date on the battery itself. There should be. a record of services etc. Give you an idea of how old it is.

Falalalalaa · 28/11/2023 15:04

It’s either the battery or it’s in tamper and needs resetting.

billyt · 28/11/2023 15:42

Entering the code would silence a tamper. Although you normally have to enter the code again to clear the panel.

LIZS · 28/11/2023 15:51

Does it need a new battery? Outages can deplete it.

CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 18:21

Thanks for the responses everyone! The panel did seem to be in tamper when powering back up which we managed to clear, I think and it’s now showing unset…although the tamper light is still on - does anyone know what this means?

Like I said, we never use it! Can’t wait to get the damn thing disconnected! Terrified it’s gonna go off randomly in the night now!

OP posts:
Falalalalaa · 28/11/2023 18:53

Did you enter your code and press reset to clear the tamper?

CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 19:11

Yep @Falalalalaa although it seems quite unresponsive and the light is still on 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 20:01

Tamper is fully cleared (DH had left the front of the control panel!) so now just the unset light, and it is beeping sporadically which makes me assume it is the battery too

OP posts:
KarmenPQZ · 28/11/2023 21:08

OMG please get it fixed. Our neighbours does this and it’s horrific for the rest of our street!

CeCe2023 · 28/11/2023 23:31

@KarmenPQZ oh we will be! We’re getting someone to sort it tomorrow!

OP posts:
CeCe2023 · 29/11/2023 00:22

Feel really bad for the beeping now! It’s only once every minute or so but we live in a terrace. I can’t actually hear it in the bedroom thanks to baby DDs white noise machine 😂 but hate the thought of people being pissed off!

Can’t see any way to silence it without disconnecting - DH being bloody useless!

OP posts:
Callisto1 · 29/11/2023 00:29

You can switch off the fuse that connects the power to it. Then it will make some noise for 20 min and die since the battery empties. Keep the power off and good bye annoying alarm!

CeCe2023 · 29/11/2023 00:51

We tried this earlier today @Callisto1 and it’s wired through the lights, but weirdly after working for a while the alarm then tripped and went off! The only way we could stop it was to turn everything off!

Ive just turned my white noise off and had a listen from the bedroom and you can hardly hear it so hopefully the neighbours are blissfully asleep! Although I’m sure they’ll hear it in their hall.

Now if only my almost 5 month old would sleep…

OP posts:
Callisto1 · 29/11/2023 07:39

Awh! Hope you managed to get some sleep. The alarm sounds really annoying.

Shellingbynight · 29/11/2023 08:37

When we moved to our current house we inherited an intruder alarm, and like you we never used it. We were worried it would randomly go off, so we got the alarm company to come out and disconnect it, which is probably your best bet. I think (?) he just took the fuses out of the control panel - anyway it was a quick easy job.

billyt · 29/11/2023 09:56

@CeCe2023

The issue you'd normally have when you lose mains power and the back up battery is either flat or dead...the outside sounder should activate. It has it's own battery.

Also why, if the system is a decently installed one, is that just 'whipping out fuses' lets the sounder activate.

You've either got a flat/dead battery in the sounder as well or it's never been wired up.
