Gout. Miracles wanted to reduce the pain

Mydogisagentleman · 28/11/2023 11:01

I am in considerable pain in my hand. I finally managed to get a telephone appointment with my GP.
Gout was diagnosed at the minor A&E on Saturday, but they were unable to prescribe treatment, despite bloods and xrays demonstrating it's presence.
Please could someone help me with anything, dietary or supplement to hasten getting better.

Forgot to include the fact that I have colchicine three times daily.
So far that has reduced it slightly but I now have diarrhoea and gout

Naproxen with a PPI to protect your stomach as a pain relief would be a good pain killer to start with.

Firstly - sympathy! Gout is bloody awful.

Drink a LOT of water. You are far more likely to get gout when dehydrated. Ideally cut out all booze but definitely no red wine, port or real ale. Some people think eating oysters, lobster, red meat can trigger it.

Take ibuprofen - I would get the ibuprofen mixed with codeine (it has a label to say not to take for more than three days but if you have gout you need the strong pills).

Look up Sally K Norton on Youtube. She has changed my life regarding gout.

CruCru · 28/11/2023 11:07

Ah, I’ve just seen your update. No idea re colchicine I’m afraid.

cbuew9 · 28/11/2023 11:18

Once you see your doctor he will prescribe the most appropriate medicine for you.
My husband takes allopurinal each day, this is a preventative medicine, to stop an attack. My husband hasn't has an attack for years now.
Regarding supplements, look up how beneficial cherries are, particularly the montmorency variety (hope I've spelt it correctly). It is proven to help with gout (lowers the uric acid levels). Holland & Barrett always used to sell it.

Thanks for the replies.
My journey to diagnosis hasn't been straightforward to say the least.
I am going to try the cherries. Anything is worth a go.
I'll see how the colchicine goes. I think I will try to get a GP appointment for allopurinol.

That will probably be at the end of December for a face to face

I take allopurinol. Only one mild attack since taking it. There's a cherry supplement in liquid form available on Amazon that I've found helpful too. Good luck.

ilovesooty · 28/11/2023 14:28

Optima Sour Cherry Juice concentrate.

DialSquare · 28/11/2023 14:30

Cherry Active tablets are good.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/11/2023 14:32

DP gets gout, he takes naproxen for it which usually stops it within a day or 2 at the most.

He's found avoiding all citrus - especially orange juice - has stopped the majority of his attacks, no idea why, but it's worked for 7 years or so now.

Mydogisagentleman · 28/11/2023 18:36

Thanks for all the responses.
Naproxen isn't touching it unfortunately. Have ordered some cherry supplements from amazon

Don't drink lager.

Eatbetterthisweek · 28/11/2023 18:51

I’ve heard Apple Cider Vinegar works for gout.

Shouldhavebutdidnt · 28/11/2023 18:53

Cherry every time - I take double the recommended for the first couple of days

Good luck it’s hideously painful

Magicmagician · 28/11/2023 19:12

Oh sounds awful - avoid tomatoes too, high in urates I think. Hope you get some pain relief soon

TheFamousMrEd · 28/11/2023 19:18

Gout is so horrible, you have my sympathies.

staying hydrated really helps me - I drink a rehydration tablet every day while it’s flaring up, and also yes to cherry juice/concentrate.

crazycatladie · 28/11/2023 19:22

Drink lots of water and put your foot up on a footstool. I started with gout when pregnant for some reason. After I had my baby I've taken allopurinol and only had one more attack since, when you have an attack of gout there's some medication you take for ten days , can't remember the name but it takes about 4 days to work. I think fizzy drinks trigger mine.
