Another dog one

I don’t think IBU but wanted to vent. Went for a Sunday Roast in a local pub that has a very child friendly garden. My children were playing on the swings/running around while DP & I sat inside waiting for food. Noticed a couple and their dog go out so thought I should join the children.
the dog (young boxer) ran over to them and started jumping up. I don’t want mine to be afraid of dogs so I smiled and stroked the dog but told DC it was time to go in (owners didn’t react or even say a word, just carried on chatting the other side of the garden).
dog then kept jumping up at the door so I ushered one child on but couldn’t get my son past the dog for a good 30 seconds as he would have ran inside.
should the owners have got dog back or spoken to us or is it up to me to be aware of dogs in pubs?

Dog owners shouldn’t allow their dogs to jump at children (or adults). Young dogs need training but the second they act out around someone else they should be it on a lead and removed from the situation.

Goodornot · 28/11/2023 09:46

They need to control their pet and I'm sick of this type of dogs owner.

Richie23 · 28/11/2023 09:57

Dogs should be kept on a lead and should not be allowed to jump at strangers, especially children. I have 3 dogs so I do know it can be hard to train them etc and when they are young they are jumpy and excitable, but that just means the owner should be even more aware of their dog and at least make an effort to control it.

vivainsomnia · 28/11/2023 09:59

Of course they should have. Not worth a post and debate!

Dog owner here. Dog should have been under control and not allowed to run around and jump up. They were totally irresponsible. The sort of people that give dog owners a bad name.

Our dog has excellent recall and would sit at our feet but in a pub garden we would keep her on a lead just in case as they won't have your full attention. No way would we allow her to run around in a public place other than a dog walking area and certainly not approach people. She has no interest in people or children but if she jumped up on someone I would be mortified. I would also definitely talk to anyone who was stroking my dog.

It's great OP that you are teaching your children to not be feaful of dogs. I drummed into mine to not approach a dog without checking with the owner first. Obviously different scenario to yours where the dog was already jumping up on them.

RoseAndRose · 28/11/2023 10:02

Yes, it's a requirement that the dog should be under control.

However, when there is a hazard in the vicinity, it is also your responsibility to ensure your DC are safe - including from the risk of others failing to do what they should.

Well, you didn't have to read the thread or comment.

@Africa2004 of course YANBU, if a business allows dog owners the courtesy of bringing their animal into premises then they need to keep it under control and not be bothering anyone else.

Goodornot · 28/11/2023 09:46

I agree. There are lots of, basically, thick and thoughtless dog owners around. I have an outdoor cafe, very dog friendly, but I ask people to keep their dogs on a lead while here as they cock legs on the tables and flowers, and eventually it smells because the next one does too etc . And some people/children don’t like dogs. Some owners put their did on a flexi lead and still allow the dog to run around peeing and bothering people while the lead is long! They don’t even look.

Same applies to young children. You should have an eye on where they are and what they’re doing. I put lots of outdoor games out for children to use. Some children (not many, I’m not tarring them all with the same brush) delight in breaking them or throwing the balls into the scrub/river outside the cafe area. The parents don’t even notice. They look at me like I’m awful when I ask them to check the games are put back before they leave.

If you’ve got dogs or children in a public place you should have your eye on them imo.

ManateeFair · 28/11/2023 10:18

Obviously the dog shouldn't have been off the lead and jumping up.

However, you smiled and stroked it and gave it attention, so that was basically sending out the signal to both the dog and the owners that you were fine with it. Next time, turn your back on the dog immediately and ask the owners to call it away or come and get it.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/11/2023 10:23

When that happend to us I marched the dog out of the garden on its hind legs to shame it. Bye dog.

AirFryerFrequentFlyer · 28/11/2023 10:24

These dog hating threads with the faux wide eyed "ooh is it me or ..." are so obvious and pathetic.

YABU for starting a thread about this. We all know dogs should be on a lead in a situation like this. So why post?

Agree we need a section where the dog haters can all froth together about our disgusting, slobbery, hairy monsters Hmm

I've used ChatGPT to create a template which can be sent to various establishments asking them to reconsider their stance on allowing dogs, things won't change unless people vote with their feet and send letters. Hopefully if enough people copy and paste this we might see some changes:

Subject: Concerns Regarding Dogs in Your Coffee Shop

Dear [Coffee Shop/Cafe Owner's Name],

I trust this message finds you well. I am writing to share crucial feedback regarding the presence of dogs in your establishment, with a specific focus on hygiene-related concerns that have significantly impacted my overall experience at your coffee shop.

Hygiene Concerns:

  • Accumulation of Fur: The shedding of dog fur onto tables and seating areas has been noticeable during my visits. This not only compromises the visual appeal of the space but raises concerns about the overall cleanliness and hygiene standards.
  • Potential Accidents: While accidents are not uncommon with animals, their occurrence in a dining area poses a significant risk to the hygiene standards expected in food and beverage establishments. Ensuring prompt and thorough cleanup is essential to maintain a clean environment.
  • Scratching Dogs: Instances of dogs scratching themselves with loose hair landing on tables and food have been observed. This not only detracts from the dining experience but also raises questions about the general cleanliness of the seating areas.

Disturbances:

  • Incessant Barking: The continuous barking of dogs in the establishment can be disruptive and bothersome to patrons seeking a tranquil environment. It detracts from the intended ambiance of your coffee shop.
  • Jumping Dogs: Dogs jumping up at patrons, particularly those seeking solitude, can be perceived as intrusive. This behavior not only disrupts the personal space of customers but may also create an uncomfortable and unwelcome atmosphere.

Additional Points of Discomfort:

  • Pathway Obstruction: Dogs lying in pathways, hindering customer movement, create inconveniences for both patrons and staff trying to navigate through the space.
  • Cross-Contamination Concerns: Waiters stroking dogs and subsequently handling food raise legitimate concerns about cross-contamination. Ensuring proper hygiene practices among staff members is crucial for the health and safety of your customers.
  • Overly Friendly Dogs: Encounters with overly friendly dogs that intrude on personal space without invitation can be unsettling. Establishing guidelines for pet owners to manage their pets' behavior would contribute to a more comfortable environment for all patrons.

Allergy Considerations:

  • While less common, allergies are still a relevant concern for some customers, myself included. The presence of dogs can trigger allergic reactions, creating an uncomfortable and potentially unsafe environment for those affected.

Given the extent of these concerns, I regret to inform you that unless there is a change in the policy, I won't be able to continue using this branch of your coffee shop. I believe that addressing these issues comprehensively will significantly contribute to the overall satisfaction of your diverse customer base.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and am hopeful for positive changes that would enhance the overall experience for everyone. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

No it’s the useless idiot dog owners.

I used to like seeing dogs but honestly the owners these days are so bloody entitled and rude.

I wonder how long it will be before a dog loon comes along to compare dogs to children.

Who hates dogs? Should OP be delighted a dog was jumping up at her kids?

Sick of people who hate poor owner behaviour being bashed as ‘dog haters’. It’s embarrassingly lazy and rather dim TBH

Of course fur babies and fur children are of equal important to skin babies or skin children......naturally......this is IRONY, just in case anyone misses it.

Oh behave yourself calling me dim

of course OP shouldn’t have to deal with dogs jumping up on her

but these threads are daily. Some sort of complaint about a dog running up to someone / licking a child / walking past a person looking at them funny and the answers are all the same “no bad dogs, just bad owners, dogs should be on leads, no you’re not unreasonable not to want a dog licking you”. There is no nuance or debate to these threads, they’re the same same same day after day

I didn’t realise you were being forced to read these threads.

Only thing more boring than dog threads is people going “Oh my God-uh ANOTHER thread about dogs”. The title is obvious don’t read it FFS 🤣🤣

Oh have another place to hide the threads we don't like.

Brexit, covid, sex/gender discussions....and now dogs.

Do MNers realise they don't have to open, read and respond to every discussion? Just open the ones you want to read.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 28/11/2023 10:46

As for the threads being the same - well if each thread changes the way someone behaves, that's a plus isn't it?

It can happen - sometimes people don't realise their behaviour is annoying, or don't understand a particular thing. As an example, I've learnt a lot about invisible disabilities on MN.
