To want a camera that doesn't record audio?

For various reasons I'm just in the process of looking for some home security cameras, including some internal ones.

I just want something that records video so I can see if anyone has been in the house when I'm out or to see if someone is downstairs when I'm upstairs. But I can't seem to find anything that doesn't also record audio.

I'm the mum of teenagers and think there's something a bit weird about the idea I could listen into their conversations when I'm not present. I get why some people might want to record audio but is it really so unreasonable to want a camera that just records video and not audio too? Am I the only person who finds this a bit creepy?

I think you’re being really weird about it, but just mute the cameras Confused

Watching them is just as weird as listening imo, If you're worried about security then cameras aren't as an effective deterrent as an alarm system anyway.

I think recording people in their own home is creepy full stop. Just put cameras outside - don't make your family pussy foot around in their own home cos they know that you can see them - it's not the big brother house you live in

I don't see how recording audio is any creepier than recording video, no.

I get what you mean about the video also being invasive. It's not something I would usually consider.

However at the moment we have a very specific issue which is causing us all some degree of fear (don't want to go into too many identifying details) which an internal camera in the hall would probably solve. I guess for us at the moment it's about weighing up different issues and video recording seems a reasonable option (in the specific circumstances) but recording conversations seems more problematic

If the cameras are only recording in spaces like the hallway/kitchen where teens are unlikely to be doing anything private would this give you a balance of reassurance v the invasion of privacy?

Is a proper monitored alarm service an option? That way there's internal cameras, but they only get triggered by unauthorized access.

Why would someone create a video camera that didn’t record audio when there is the opportunity to mute or disable the audio on cameras. If whatever is happening inside your home is happening when members of your family are present than a camera wouldn’t solve it because they will always find ways around it, if presumably you were to tell that there movements were being recorded.

JurassicFantastic · 28/11/2023 07:47

I hadn't realised it was possible to disable audio recording so thank you to people who suggested this - I'll look into it.

In some ways a monitored alarm service might be a better option but I suspect out of my price range.

It's a really complicated situation but basically there is someone who has to have access to our home - often when we are here (though not necessarily in a position to stand over him) and sometimes when we are not here. We have some suspicions he may be over stepping boundaries (shall we say) in terms of when and where he goes in the house, and possibly who is with him. Stopping him access altogether is unfortunately not a current option.

There is a place we could put a camera and it would only video comings and goings in the hallway (which is all we need), but hallway is semi-open plan to the lounge so any audio in lounge would also be recorded.
