Ds is only in reception so not had to deal with this before. He's been off school since Thursday with a fever every day, Sunday he woke up fine with no temperature but by 11 had a temp of 40 and acting really poorly again, yesterday fever from the moment he woke up. This morning he's again acting fine and no temperature.

Am I supposed to send him back to school today and hope he doesn't go downhill again or do you keep them off until they've had a day completely fine?

Yabu - School
Yanbu - another day at home.

Calpol and school if he seems well

They will always call to collect if he goes downhill

MintJulia · 28/11/2023 06:51

I always wanted ds to have 24 hours without a temperature, and eating/sleeping normally before I sent him back to school.

Copasetic · 28/11/2023 06:52

I think I'd send him back but give him calpol before he goes. As you say, easy to collect him again if he goes downhill.

I send mine as soon as they’re well enough because I have to be at work teaching other dc. You can always let school know to keep an extra eye.

I agree with this. They need time to rest and recover before going back to school. OP, I would keep him off today and see how he is, especially as you thought he was ok on Sunday and he went downhill again.

If he still had a fever yesterday I'd keep him home today to rest, then back tomorrow. That's what we did with DD before half term after they called us to pick her up one afternoon and her temp was sky high. They are still so little in reception, they need recovery time.

Crimsonbow · 28/11/2023 06:57

Depends on the work situation. If I wasn't working that day, then I'd keep them off for another day in your situation. If you have work that's far away or difficult to leave, with nobody else who could pick up DC if school call, I'd keep them off because I wouldn't want an ill child waiting say an hour for me.

Important to share this with DCs dad though (if possible). So that both of your jobs take a hit imo.

I've just taken his temperature again and it's going up so I've answered my own question!

Thank you everyone, day at home for us.

I always wait 24 hours with no temperature before sending them back. They need a day to recuperate, eat etc. I'd probably also see the dr for a fever that's lasting over 5 days.
