To ask for advice 're university entry video?

DrSeuss · 27/11/2023 21:13

DR has received a request for a university entry video from one of the places he is applying to. I have a few ideas but would welcome any help, please. When I applied, back when God was a lad, you turned up for interview in person. The video must last Mac two minutes, just explain his reasons for choosing the course and must arrive within ten days. We have an iPad, laptop and iPhone.
Disclaimer he looks nothing like Elle Woods and will not look good on a kilo in a swimming pool!
TIA

In the UK?
What sort of course/ uni? I’ve never heard of this.

LudicrousSexFudge · 27/11/2023 21:17

What fresh hell is this?

YorkshirePuddingBelongs · 27/11/2023 21:18

Fuck me im pleased I went to Uni when I did. A video?! Awful! And not very inclusive I must say

DrSeuss · 27/11/2023 21:28

The course is one for an NHS based career ( not medicine) at a quite well known Northern university. I was also horrified. I suppose most people have at least a phone to record on. Do we just go straight and shoot him explaining his reasons for wanting to study this course at this uni? Do we go quirky? Do we bring in his related hobbies ( qualified in first aid for D of E and as a Scout leader)? Do I put him in a bikini clutching a teeny dog?

This!

I thought the HE sector was all about reducing opportunities for unconscious bias...

SD1978 · 27/11/2023 21:43

Fuck that- but it has to be done. I'd go with a short photo montage in the middle- and probably leave out anything he's already written- so why he has an interest in the course, what he feels he brings to it and during that a few photos of him with his first aid, etc. end it with him on camera. Thankfully it's short, but seriously- he's not going in a frigging film course.

savoycabbage · 27/11/2023 21:50

Like on Clueless?

DrSeuss · 27/11/2023 21:57

More like Legally Blonde! Except he's not blonde, hates pink and we only have a cat.

Disadvantaging unattractive kids, stammerers, shy kids... jesus, the more i think about this, the worse it gets.

idontlikealdi · 27/11/2023 22:11

This is so wrong I'd investigate their diversity stats and look for somewhere else.

titchy · 27/11/2023 22:15

That's awful on so many levels. Can you name them?

similarminimer · 27/11/2023 22:22

I interview medical students- we don't ask for this. But if I were watching i would just want someone looking down the camera, saying'i want to study thiis subject because...' at your university because.....

Any production would put me off

Treaclesandwich · 27/11/2023 22:25

Jesus, is that how you get into University these days? I’d be considering non-graduate careers 😂

clary · 27/11/2023 22:27

Yeh I've never heard of this - what a terrible idea.

My DD would utterly die - and she was a uni student worth having. Are they wanting to see what students look like, their ethnicity - wow it's so uninclusive that I cannot even begin to wonder what they are thinking.

What is the uni OP?

This is good advice. Keep it simple.

Don't channel Elle Woods 🐩

MessyClock · 27/11/2023 22:31

I would avoid being intentionally
quirky or trying to be funny. Humble but confident, showing his enthusiasm for the career and something to say that he has actually researched the course and university. Definitely don’t try too hard. And a small smile here and there will help. Not a sinister grin!

Hankunamatata · 27/11/2023 22:32

Please tell me its not for a biomedical degree

This.

In fairness, for many NHS based careers, you do have to be personable. It isn't discriminatory. The whole career depends on you being able to speak to people kindly, communicate clearly, and yes, I would hope that would be part of the selection process.

brainexplorer · 27/11/2023 22:46

It's no more discriminatory than an interview in person. Perhaps less so, because at least they can control the way they're perceived slightly.

Rummikub · 27/11/2023 22:47

Yes I’ve seen this. It was for an application to optometry.

The uni sent questions though.
(why do you want to study optometry? Why x university)

The student practised by recording herself first.

DrSeuss · 28/11/2023 16:46

Thanks everybody for your input. I really appreciate it.
we will help him draft a speech referencing stats about the university and talking points found online. The degree is actually Paramedic Science which I am revealing in the hope that it may get a little more input if there are any paramedics out there, please.
i told him this morning that we should try to recreate Elle’s scene using a bath, a mankini and our cat. He was suitably impressed!
