When did your kids write their names ?

I'm feeling the pressure to teach my DD to write / read.

She'll be 4 in January. She's clearly my first child as I'm sure I won't be fretting about this with my second.

Where should she be, academically now ?

I want to make sure she has a good start when she starts school.

What did you focus on with your child, for them to have a good start in reception ?

When are they ' reception ready ' ?

She's holding the pen a bit better ( I've been trying for ages to show her how to hold it ). She can trace her name, but can't write it on her own yet. She can trace squiggly lines etc.

She recognises most letters and numbers. She can do a bit of addition and subtraction with blocks etc.

She can draw a person.

What can I do at home to get her ready ?

She's at a preschool nursery 4 days a week. But I want to be proactive.

I'm afraid / aware I sound like a dick probably and this is PFB syndrome or however you call it, I'm just anxious not to be missing the boat.

Her teachers haven't flagged anything that she can't do. I want to have a consecration with them about how she's getting on in those areas.

So far they've just talked about the fact she is settling well and happy and has friends, that kind of thing. Nothing ' academic ' yet. I know she's still so young of course.

All of my 4Dc varied with writing their name. Dc1 wasn’t interested in preschool or home and only started writing his name after Christmas in reception, he was 5. Dc2 who’s 12 months younger was writing her name independently at 4. Dc3 was independently writing it at 3.5, she’s an August baby and was way ahead of the others starting school (still is in yr2). Dc4 started reception this year, he had no interest, just started and is doing great. I honestly wouldn’t worry, focus on play, fine & gross motor skills through play & craft, eating, toileting and enjoying & listening to stories.

This was me last year! Things I've found important - independent toileting (even if not the best wiping...), able to open own lunchbox, recognition (not necessarily writing) own name for pegs etc, and the ability to get along/share/take turns - nursery will be invaluable here.

When ds started school, they actively asked us not to try to teach them to read. Just to follow the homework for phonics, and read them regular books every day. There's a huge variation between those who've been in childcare, those with more academic parents, etc. Anecdotally the differences I've seen between first and second kids is huge too.

Ds could write his own name just about, but didn't hold a pencil properly and didn't take to it with us or nursery. Less than 1 term in and his grip is great, he's blending letters, and starting to enjoy colouring/drawing, despite waiting for hand surgery 😅 He's more of a numbers/running in circles/throwing himself around all day long child...
