Feeling yucky 2 days before holiday… help!

Due to go away on Thursday, been looking forward to it for ages, it’s just in the UK but first time away for a couple of years. Has my flu jab end of last week and don’t know if it’s due effects from that or if I’m coming down with the lurgy but I’m feeling pretty yucky - coldy / headaches. Please give me your tips on how to feel better quickly?! I’ve got to work until Wednesday evening so won’t get much chance to rest. I want to cry! Sounds silly but I was just really loooing forward to the break.

Exactly the same thing happened to me in 2016. I had the flu vaccination two days before I was going on a walking holiday in the Cotswolds. By the second day of the holiday I was in full blown cold mode, it started to dry up on the fourth day. I never thought the flu vax could have done that, and I've never had it since.

Did you feel poorly on the day you were due to go @Frances0911 ? Would most people dose up and go if it was a holiday in the UK? I’ve been looking forward to it so much but now I’m panicking too much to be excited!

Yes I did feel poorly the day I went, but I persevered by dosing myself up with Ibuprofen and Paracetamol, taking it alternately every four hours.

It was a Ramblers walking holiday that was quite expensive, and I'd really been looking forward to it. I basically spent the first four days of the holiday walking around the countryside freezing cold and with a runny nose, and one of those days it even poured with rain. It was a solo's holiday and I didn't know anyone, but most people could see I was ill and were really kind, and a couple of people even remarked that I quite literally looked like death warmed up!

I definitely think it was caused by the flu vaccine, as I rarely get colds, and I actually haven't had one since.

What kind of holiday are you going on @Cloud44?

It’s a city break for a few days. Yesterday and today I’ve felt nauseas , headaches, shivery. Would you still go? So many people seem to have a lurgy or some kind at the moment, it is the time of year for it I guess , I just don’t want to feel really rough there but don’t want to cancel!

I would still go, as at least you will be in a nice cosy hotel room, should you start to feel really ill and unable to go out. Also, being in a city, you should be fairly close to good medical care should you need it.

Though if you're going with other people, will they be sympathetic if you start to feel really rough and can't go out, or will they make you feel guilty?

Cloud44 · 27/11/2023 20:17

Going with my partner and I’d hope he would still go out and explore if I needed a few hours to rest, I wouldn’t want him to think he had to stay in the hotel and not still be out enjoying it! I get a bit anxious about going away so I’m probably worrying more than others would do about it.

Unless you feel absolutely dreadful, then you should definitely go if you're with your partner. He will take care of you if you start to feel really ill, and like you say, he won't mind going out on his own if you're not up to it. There's also a good chance that by Thursday or Friday it will have passed, and you'll be fine.

Thank you for your kind replies @Frances0911 . I just didn’t expect to still feel ropey from the jab, it may of course be a virus and not connected , it’s just annoy in timing!

Still not feeling very good , so frustrating.

Sudafed (if you can take it), paracetamol and ibuprofen, olbas oil, hot drinks and early nights. It sounds like you have a cold. It happens, and is unlikely to be linked to the flu lag (an inactivated vaccine)

Funkyslippers · 28/11/2023 13:12

Night Nurse and lemsip (not together) are my go tos

It doesn't sound like you've got flu, just a bad cold. There's lots going round at the moment. It's only Tuesday; you've still got the whole of today and Wednesday before you go on your trip and you'll probably be on the mend by Thursday. It wouldn't even occur to me to cancel a holiday because of a cold.

Cookerhood · 28/11/2023 16:14

You can't get flu or a cold from the flu jab - it can make you a bit achy etc but won't give you respiratory symptoms. Lots of other viruses around at this time of year.

Cloud44 · 28/11/2023 16:47

My sensible head knows you are right @ManateeFair but because I’m feeling pretty rubbish I think I’m over worrying! Feel so achy today, especially the arm I got the jab that’s why I wonder if it’s late side effects. I guess worse case scenario I can go back to the hotel for breaks if I feel ropey, I just wanted to enjoy it but I guess most people would still go as planned if they weren’t feeling 100% im just over worrying?
