To wonder about changing attitudes to household security

When I was a kid in the 80s my grandparents only locked their door when they were in bed or had gone out. When they went they used the back door, locked it, and then hung the key on a hook on the inside of a small cubby hole next to the front door, accessible to anyone.

My parents had one set of keys and would hide the key (badly) under a brick next to the door.

I wouldn’t dream of doing this stuff. Is that because crime is higher? Or the type of crime? Or did I just have a family who were very lax when it came to security?

We live in a large village and a modern door with a handle lock not a Yale type lock that can’t be opened from the outside except with a key. We only lock the door when we are sleeping or out! We don’t have a ring doorbell or cctv etc. All the doors can be seen from the street so lots of passive surveillance.

We left our back gate and door completely unlocked so our dog could let himself in and out when his pack came calling 😂
Would later see him with 6 other dogs all 'playing out' on the fields.

@MadeOfAllWork

Yes it defo is.

You're talking to an ex organised crime figure.
(I decided to reform when my wife wanted to have a baby and leave that life)
I saw a lot of things. Crime is up.

Economy is Down. Crime goes up. Simples.(compare the meerkat voice)

I was born in the 80s. We always locked the doors and windows when going out. The front door had a latch so you could never just open it. Double locked at night time. We do similar now. We leave the back door unlocked when in the house but opportunistic theft would be harder due to gardens enclosed by fairly high fences. Crime round here seems to be mostly breaking in to steal car keys, so I do keep the car key out of sight, although no-one would want our car!
