Aibu to think "Reading is everyone's responsibility" is not an attractive slogan for a children's literacy campaign?

To me it seems patronising and preachy, and the opposite of anything that might inspire a child (or their parents) to read a book.

I don't know where the slogan has come from but our school and others seem to be using it.

It makes me think of random people charging up to random children and demanding that they read a particular passage from a book and not letting them go until they've done it 😂

I guess “read to your kids you scumbags” was too harsh?

TBH, the type of people who don’t read to their kids could do with some patronising comments and harsh realities but I know I’ll be shot down for that.

Actually I still prefer your slogan. Short and to the point. 😆

The other just sounds like boring corporate speak.

Reading‘s attempts to attain city-zenship have sadly been thwarted every time

But we've got the IDR and a full size no nudes Bayeux tapestry!

I don't really understand why people are so annoyed with it. It surely is a basic part of parenting that you would help to teach your child to read therefore it is partly a parents responsibility. Not sure why it needs to be worded in an alternative way.

NoTouch · 26/11/2023 15:33

Don't think anyone is particularly annoyed with it as such, the response of the majority of posters on this thread shows it is ineffective, poorly thought out and doesn't do the job it was intended to do - it is a wasted opportunity to motivate parents to spend time reading with their children.

StarlightLime · 26/11/2023 15:39

Yes, it's downright stupid. It's not my responsibility to ensure random children I don't even know have access to reading material.

StaunchMomma · 26/11/2023 16:22

It is, at least, honest!

The fact that reading pays off educationally is hardly new information. Schools are forever reminding parents of the direct correlations between consistent early years reading and success in GCSEs.

I've had this conversation a few times with school Mum friends who are amazed at the level a couple of our DS's are reading at - they make comments like 'Oh but yours ENJOY reading' and 'Oh but yours find spellings EASY' but the truth is we both made reading a priority from a very young age and have insisted on it every single day for years and so now we are seeing the pay off with our kids having a good understanding of language and vocabulary.

In my experience, those parents who haven't bothered have done so because it's a pain in the arse to work at it. It's something you have to persevere with and that means yes, it's everyone's responsibility, really.

Lol and daring crane rescues from burning buildings.

idk why they don’t give it to us.

alrighthen · 08/12/2023 00:10

It’s meant in the same way as ‘every teacher is a teacher of English’. So science teachers might talk about the etymology of scientific words or help students with their written expression. I entirely agree with you that this should not be parent or child facing messaging though! It’s very offputting to think about reading as a responsibility!

SgtBilko · 08/12/2023 00:26

It’s a terrible slogan and it doesn’t really even mean anything. It doesn’t say that teaching reading is everyone’s responsibility, or that being able to read is everyone’s responsibility. It makes reading or Reading sound onerous and boring.

Coolstorysis · 08/12/2023 00:43

I saw some news things that not one child in a certain area of America was proficient in maths or reading. That sounds so unlikely, wtf is going on? I don't think slogans like this help.

I know we are not like the USA exactly but we usually trundle along with them.

WandaWonder · 08/12/2023 00:44

Maybe it is to remind parents everything should not be all up to the school

I have just literally read something on Facebook from Billy Connolly where he says that reading is your ticket to the world which much better.

But Billy Connolly is at least a generation away from today’s parents.

Honestly- work in a school- it’s depressing how little interest many parents have in reading to/with their children.

It's a bit ominous if you live in Reading.

😂😂😂

Thank goodness Dolly Parton doesn’t feel that way!

Not by me!

YANBU

It's a horrible, smarmy, and officious saying - it sounds like it should be a warning on the end of a financial services advert 'reading the small print is your own responsibility' sort of thing.

Ugh people these days, there's no fun left in anything. It's like the opposite of inspiring and creative.

Also 'everyone's responsibility'. Really. Don't think so. I haven't got any kids and it's not my responsibility to come round your house and read to your kids thanks. I rarely read a book myself these days as prefer audible etc, so reading a book myself is unlikely to happen, am I being irresponsible too?
