Thing or Think?

There's a thread running atm about whether it's

"You've got another think coming" or
"You've got another thing coming"

Of course, if you think I'm lending you £500, you do indeed have another think coming.

I've heard this error in real life often and now there's a thread about it.

What I'd be interested to know is the percentage of people who are getting it wrong. So.

YABU It's another thing coming
YANBU It's another think coming.

This comes up on here all the time.

‘Think’, obviously. ‘Thing’ is just an error that has become normalised.

IHeartGeneHunt · 25/11/2023 09:50

Think. It means "if you think (whatever) then you can think again."

True. Still find it mildly irritating though.

There was an bbc news article (top story) I was reading the other day that quoted a what's app message that had used think instead of thing and had acknowledged it as the writer's error

ie "if X thinks they are going on the trip after this, they have another think [sic] coming"

I've no idea which is correct (and not really bothered), but threads on mumsnet are usually very keen to assert that it should be think, hence the correction on the bbc article caught my attention.

It was always 'think' where I came from. I thought 'thing' was from the US. Not helped by TV subtitles that often change words and spellings into something wrong. And not helped by mumbling actors and actors who also get things wrong.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/11/2023 10:24

I grew up with thing. It makes sense to me (there will be a repercussion for this behaviour).
I accept think is older.

meatbaseddessert · 25/11/2023 10:26

I always thought it was 'thing'. Then read on here about 'think' did some googling and realised it actually is 'think'. Makes much more sense!

mrssanchez · 25/11/2023 10:27

It's just one of those sayings that people hear wrong and repeat wrong for so long they convince themselves it's correct. Like "putting someone on a peddle-stool"

It's the same use as "have a think about it," using think as a noun rather than a verb. It's mostly a more informal, colloquial use, which I think (verb) is why people sometimes get confused about it.
