To keep my dvds?

Way too much stuff, trying to declutter, and the dvds are in the firing line. I'm alright letting 2/3rds go, but should I power on and just cull them completely? I don't (at present) watch them. It's frankly too much effort to watch them on the ps4, vs the instant gratification of online stuff, but, these films/series are things you can't easily find online (at least without paying again), and one day my anti-sleep kids will grow up enough to sort their own bedtimes and my evenings might amount to more than a brain dead half hour before I collapse from exhaustion, and the dvds could make a come back.

YANBU: hold on to those treasured discs!

YABU: dvds are a thing of the past, get rid of them all

There was a similar thread a few days ago...

But generally... not everything available online. Why pay again? In folders they take up no space...

So it depends really on how likely you are to watch them...

Sorry, I didn't think to check for other threads. Boring subject anyway really, sorry

I had around 300 dvd/blue Ray. Didn't have the heart to throw them out or sell them for pennies.

I got rid of all the cases and booklets and put them all in those dvd books/folders. I think one took about 100 discs and takes up the space of a couple of paperbacks.

I rarely watch them but it's nice to still have them.

Tricky one. I still think DVDs have their place if you do cottage holidays in places that don’t have wifi. I am also trying to declutter and while the thought of those DVD folders is tempting, the thought of sending all those cases to landfill is not.

Meredusoleil · 24/11/2023 20:32

I still have hundreds of DVDs and DVD player. The children watch them more than me (on the car DVD player). Not to mention some VHS cassettes and a VHS player (not that I watch). Also have hundreds of CDs that I do occasionally listen to in the car.

Don't like to think how much space they take up, as then would probably want to get rid!

CranfordScones · 24/11/2023 20:52

Online versions don't have all the extras and features on the DVDs.

Folders/wallets, as others said, would be a decent compromise. A few DVDs on a shelf looks OK for the ones you really like. I used to have a one-in-one-out policy for DVDs. Then a relative died and I inherited a load...

Timely seasonal reminder that today's purchases are tomorrow's decluttering problem.

AlwaysForksAndMarbles · 24/11/2023 20:55

We are just taking all ours (several hundred) out of their cases and putting them in those little envelopes, and can then house them all in a fraction of the space. We have all sorts that will never be on streaming, including a lot of BFI things and foreign language films, and some which are favourites but not always available to stream. The cases are going in the loft until we decide to ditch them.

SurelySmartie · 24/11/2023 20:55

It’s not boring it’s just coincidence there was someone asking on here last week should they keep their dvds and cds and what do other people do.

PaintPicturesBlueandGrey · 24/11/2023 20:57

I have mine in folders and we have games consoles that can play them, many are not available on streaming services.

ruby1957 · 24/11/2023 21:21

I have lots of series - ER, Seinfeld, CSI, Only fools and |Horses etc which I keep on DVDs (and some VHS as I have a VHS player) as well as music concerts which I know I would not find in their entirety on any streaming.

I also like the fact that I can choose to play, stop or repeat what I am watching without trying to find each one on streaming services. No adverts either.

Why pay every month for too much selection when I have the series I like to watch again on hand.
They really don't take up much storage - certainly less than books.

OctoblocksAssemble · 24/11/2023 21:47

Well, I have ordered a folder, so there's a win for decluttering 🤣
I will struggle to throw out the boxes, but yes that does reduce the volume of space used do much. And one day I may be very grateful that you all talked me out of chucking the lot.
Thanks everyone

I've kept mine in folders too, and regularly pick them up secondhand then redonate.

I find choosing a dvd much more relaxing than scrolling and I like the bubble of a whole series with no interruptions.

Ooh, can you link to which folder you have ordered please? I was going to just use a regular ring binder with A4 plastic wallet (putting the DVDs in sideways and back to back to fit 4 in each), but not sure that will work well!

Great idea

I got rid of a load to Music Magpie the other week. But I do have some CDs I have kept in my loft. Only a handful. Doesn't take up much space.

I can see the benefits to holding on to this stuff, streaming doesn't always give you all series available for free indefinitely.

Diversion · 24/11/2023 22:22

I have DVDs and CDs and refuse to get rid of any of them. Online streaming services cannot be relied on to have my favourite films and I can copy them to USB to play on my laptop for my camping holidays. I also have a whole collection of films to watch should the internet go down at any point. Old fashioned perhaps but I actually own them and nobody can take them off me. It is often cheaper to buy older films and music on CD/DVD than rent or buy them online anyway.
