Can you freeze chickpeas from a jar?

Sorry posting for traffic. Those chickpeas and butter beans in a jar are expensive (£4). Could you freeze say half of them? (In separate container). Is there any reason why I shouldn’t ether from a safety or quality point of view and has anyone tried it? Thanks.

Fine to freeze them, though I personally would batch cook whatever I was making with them (stews mostly) and have them frozen in the batch as it gives them a sauce which stops them going a bit floury, but yes, it's a good idea.

Know what you mean about batch cooking but then I’d be bound to what I’d cooked. Sometimes like to decide on the day! Good to know thank you.

Chickpeas are like, 50p a tin and butter beans aren’t much more. Where on earth are you buying them?

I don't know about jars but I certainly freeze tinned ones. Whatever beans or chickpeas I use I seldom use a whole can. The rest are bagged up in the freezer and I'll add them to soups or stews later.

I use half a tin then keep rest in fridge and add them to salads and stews throughout the week.

I know but tinned chickpeas are never that nice! I’ve used them for years but don’t you think freshly boiled are always nicer? I do anyway, but they’re a hassle to do. I thought I’d give those ones in a jar a go in the hope that they taste a bit nicer than tinned! They’re by an online company but just noticed they’ve started selling them in some Sainsbury’s, M&S and Waitrose, and there’s another brand in Holland and Barrett. So more accessible.

It’ll say on the jar if suitable for freezing. I would’ve thought.

just freeze in their liquid - absolutely fine - I do this

SunsetApple · 23/11/2023 23:25

Yes, they freeze well.

ReviewingTheSituation · 23/11/2023 23:28

I would have thought by the time you've frozen and defrosted them they won't taste any different/better than the tinned ones?

Thanks all.
I don’t know I’ll have to try but tinned ones always have a vaguely musty taste to me.
