To hate when people eat or smoke whilst on the phone?

The title says it all.
I just can't stand it when I am trying to have a conversation with someone and they have to pause to chew and swallow, or take a drag.

It annoys me if they have called. If i catch them at their lunch, not so bothered. my mum is a heavy smoker and always breaks into an ear-shattering coughing fit when I answer the phine to her.

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 12/03/2008 19:36

that's my MIL. constantly eats/drinks on the phone. will phone us then when we answer takes aaages to say hello because she's got a mouthful. drives DH nuts. (and me as well)

Mumcentreplus · 12/03/2008 19:37

lol......does it really get to you that much?...if so call back later

I have a friend who seems to always be eating crisps, no matter what time of day I call him or he calls me I get a conversation through a mouthful of crisps and pauses for crunching.

lol...my sister is like that...I can just hear slurpin!!...I just say 'don't you stop eatin woman!' and she laughs...I've come to terms[grins]

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/03/2008 19:41

I smoke and I eat but I don't multitask enough to do those when I am holding a conversation with someone.
I wouldn't do it if they were standing right next to me so I don't see that it is acceptable during a phonecall.

talking and listening to a chomper is horrid
smoking, well i cant object bar hacking cough screeech as nickytwotimes says
worst for me is talking on phone to someone when they are talking to someone else (not work)
thats the rude rudest

Mumcentreplus · 12/03/2008 19:43

I suppose it depends how close they are to you...I always feel the need to have a crafty one when I'm on the phone to the bank for some reason

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 12/03/2008 19:46

I have to admit to being an occasional eater and constant multi-tasker on the phone. Usually on hour long conversations with parents, I'll be getting things out of the fridge and cupboard for supper, laying the table, putting on the washing etc. Also picking at nibble style food that my dh is preparing.

But, I only do the eating thing with close family, and they have been known to do the same to me. Maybe it's in the genes?

nickytwotimes · 12/03/2008 19:48

Ooooh, but have you ever been on the phone to someone and just known they're on the loo?!

Maveta · 12/03/2008 19:52

ewww.. that happened to me today, called my dad on his mobile and chatted for a few minutes about nothing in particular before he said he couldn't get my mum because he was on the loo! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH. I hung up immediately. Eww.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/03/2008 19:52

nicky yes, my cousin is a horror for that. She's usually drunk but that's no excuse, why not just say you need the loo and call back after.

oh no nicky have never even thought of that!

no no say folks dont do that!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/03/2008 19:54

lol. I once called FIL who was happily chatting and I could hear a loo flushing, then a handdrier. I passed the phone to DH who confirmed he was out at the pub and in the gents. Why answer your phone in that situation?

mobile phones yuk they just encourage this sort of stuff there was a limit to what you could do attached to a curly cord
infact, there was an art to it..
