To think I may be psychic?

2 strange things have happened this week.

  1. I have a newborn and during the last midwife visit she asked me what my sons name was. I had a complete mind blank and for some unknown reason, very nearly said his name was Leo. His name is nothing like Leo and this was not a name we considered. I laughed and apologised to the midwife for basically forgetting my child’s name and said ‘so weird, I was going to say his name was Leo when it is not, it is X.’ She replied ‘Oh how funny, my son is named Leo.’….
  2. Tonight, I said to my husband that I’d noticed many more cars beeping each other on the busy road outside our living room window. I said ‘The cars need to slow down as there is going to be an accident one day.’ I was putting my eldest son to bed when my husband came and told me that a car had crashed outside into some railings. Luckily no one was hurt.

Is this a coincidence? Or am I truly gifted?

YABU - Just a coincidence you wally
YANBU - Do the lottery for this week asap

Of course you aren’t. Leo is a fairly common name you hit on randomly, and you’d actually noticed cars honking one another outside your house before concluding this suggested an accident was likely. One is coincidence, the other is you just noticing something that was actually happening.

Yes, this.

AceofPentacles · 23/11/2023 07:52

We all are. It's like a muscle, the more you train it, the more you "know" (things you wouldn't normally be expected to know).

Frasers · 23/11/2023 07:55

Goodness op. I must be psychic too, I also lived on a busy road and said if cars didn’t slow down there would be an accident, and of course there sadly was.

the other was a coincidence. 😂

@limefrog

Intuitive/ psychic levels are just

Another words people describe things differently based on their experiences, backgrounds society expections , their faiths or not,
on their personalities whether they are more on the angle of being more of an analytical or a feelings kinds of person expressing themselves,
the reality is people are / can be both of these ways of thinking,
but it is often conditioned out of us ,

to fit in to society's expections of what's the right way /socially acceptable way of thinking,
what I find is very interesting too?

is why does cultures, societies discourage, condition us , even in history and in certain societies of world even today, persecute punish someone for being simply highly pschic/Intuitive kind of person?

we have different senses all over our body ,

even the stomach, is known as the second brain 🧠,

This all makes sense as it's combination of evolutionary ways of Primeval ways to ensure our species surival.

one Primeval instinct is to fear spiders wildlife animals with very good valid reasons to do so,

another Primeval instinctive turn up our noses 👃 at very sour tasting food, drinks or foods, drinks that "tastes off dodgy" ect

the fear of heights, crossing bridges, especially if shakey ones , or if they type of bridges you can see through slats of showing great drop, of gushing fast moving water of river,

I even sensed before i went to sort out my old rundown shed ,
that i needed to be extra careful, to do so,
had a weird feeling, couldn't explain it or put my finger on why,
as i had looked for stuff in my shed before,

on this occasion i found a dead decaying cat had died unfortunately there,

Obviously a cat dying in the shed is not that out of the ordinary at all,

It'd the fact i have been in that shed lots of times never had weird feelings before that about about going to do so,

Why all of the sudden being nervous on edge, trepidation on that occasion before i even walked into the shed?
on the day i found dead decaying cat,

My shed is at the bottom of the garden and I started to feel like that way when i stepped out of my house back door,

FuzzyPuffling · 23/11/2023 08:12

That poor cat. Maybe check your shed more often?

CreationNat1on · 23/11/2023 08:19

Are you the adult child of An acoholicor were you parentified?

Sometimes, it's simply being hyper sensitive to the atmosphere around you and you pick up on micro facial expressions or sense something because you are hyper aware. Not psychic but heightened awareness.

APocketOfGooseFood · 23/11/2023 08:24

The midwife has probably mentioned previously that she has a son called Leo,, so you have subconsciously connected the name with her, and then recalled it when you saw her.

If people are regularly speeding on your road, then the balance of probability is that sooner or later there will be an accident.

Always look for the simplest explanation: it is by far the most likely.

Malarandras · 23/11/2023 08:25

No.

DyslexicPoster · 23/11/2023 08:26

Hibambinos · 23/11/2023 02:29

Coincidence…but yeah do the lottery just in case 😉

This 😅

StellarPerformance · 23/11/2023 08:46

Richard III was not found by a psychic.
He was found by teams of archaeologists and historians working from many years of historical evidence.

Errrrrrm · 23/11/2023 09:15

I’m going to go against the flow and say yes you could have some ability. I’ve had a few things like your Leo incident happen to me, where I knew something I couldn’t have known (and couldn’t have subconsciously picked up from cues). It felt like remembering something. With me, it’s usually something that will have strong emotions attached to it in the future, so like I’ll remember something that’s going to happen and then when it does happen it turns out to be annoying in some way.

Never had any luck on the lottery though 😂

Pumpkinspicelattetime · 23/11/2023 09:21

You say last midwife visit, does that nean you've had previous appointments with this particular midwife? If so, chances are she's mentioned her son Leo before.

WakingCliche · 23/11/2023 09:53

That’s coincidence but there is also intuition, my family are good at this whereas DH family needs something in their face. It’s just a combination of being really observant and noticing all the tiny nuances.

It’s like if you meet someone new how observant are you? I just notice everything even tiny details. DH just wouldn’t.

It can be linked to anxiety and people that are very observant think they may be psychic and it’s called perceived magical thinking, often linked to MH issues.

limefrog · 23/11/2023 10:00

@cerisepanther73 Intuitive and psychic don't mean the same thing.

If you say that you are psychic then it means you think that you have some kind of supernatural powers of telepathy or clairvoyance.

Whereas if you say you are intuitive, that just means you are good at making judgements and understanding things based on what is actually in front of you. It might feel unconscious, but it's because you have understood something that is there to be seen.

I would say that everything you describe can be explained by intuition, luck and coincidence.

I think a lot of people who say they are psychic actually mean that they are spiritual or they hold certain spiritual beliefs.

Some people are particularly perceptive or intuitive (based on things they can see), but no one has supernatural powers like telepathy or clairvoyance.

You might find the book “Extraordinary Knowing: Science, Skepticism and the Inexplicable Powers of the Human Mind ” by Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer interesting. It begins:

“IN DECEMBER OF 1991, my daughter’s harp was stolen; we got it back. But it came back in a way that irrevocably changed my familiar world of science and rational thinking. It changed the way I go about living in that world. It changed the way I perceive the world and try to make sense out of it.

This book is about what unfolded as I attempted to explain what happened. I encountered questions: huge and disconcerting questions about the world as we know it. They held radical import not just for science but for the ways we live our everyday lives. This is a book about those questions and some of the surprising answers I encountered along the way.

In 1991 I was teaching in the psychology department of the University of California at Berkeley and at the University Medical Center in San Francisco. I was doing research on female development and seeing patients in my psychoanalysis practice. I was a member of numerous professional associations, doing committee work, attending international meetings, functioning on editorial boards, and lecturing all over the country. I was a training and supervising analyst in the American Psychoanalytic Association. I was busy and fulfilled, and life was running along the way it does.

My eleven-year-old daughter, Meg, who’d fallen in love with the harp at age six, had begun performing. She wasn’t playing a classical pedal harp but a smaller, extremely valuable instrument built and carved by a master harp maker. After a Christmas concert, her harp was stolen…”

CurlewKate · 23/11/2023 10:18

I can categorically reassure you that you aren't.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/11/2023 10:35

I think the name think is fairly psychic

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/11/2023 10:35

thing

I agree with you about that, about the grave of king Richard 111 discovery at city of Leicester,
It was one particular female historian or female archaeologist,

listened to her intuitive instinct, who found King Richard 111 grave,

obviously years of experience in a her job played a part too,

it was combination of both factors made a difference in this kind of discovery,

CurlewKate · 23/11/2023 13:08

Intuitive is using your physical senses to a higher level than most people.

Psychic doesn't exist.

cerisepanther73 · 23/11/2023 13:23

@CurlewKate

Very interesting insightful thought- provoking point of view in your latest post.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 23/11/2023 13:28

I was expecting some much more compelling examples than the ones you give op.

  1. Sometimes when we use the wrong word it will be a word that has significance for someone present, in just the same way that we sometimes roll two dice and get a double six. Think of all the times you have been in a tired brain fog, used the wrong word, and it meant bugger all.
  2. You heard a lot of traffic beeping and commented that there might be an accident 'one day'. I think the word youare looking for here might be observant , rather than psychic.

It really wasn’t. Philippa Langley isnt an archaeologist or a historian. She’s an unusually driven hobbyist loon (like many of the RIII Society, who think he didn’t kill the Princes in the Tower), with an obsession with RIII she developed when she got ME, had to quit her marketing job, and started writing a screenplay. She did actually draw on many years of archaeologists’ and historians’ research, to determine possible sites for the church where he was buried — those were determined in the 70s, long before she got interested. The guff about getting a feeling in her bones when she saw ‘R’ on a reserved parking place was pretty much like saying you have a feeling that it’s going to be heads or tails, or that a baby will be a boy or a girl.

If anything it was her genius for marketing and self-publicity that contributed most — her key act was to get the backing of Leicester City Council on the proviso that if they allowed the dig (it was their car park) RIII would be buried in Leicester.
