have the first 3 days sickness unpaid? Then ssp? So if I get a sickness bug I’m going to lose 2 days pay? I’ve never encountered this and I’ve worked in some Mickey Mouse places

Yes, that is ssp. You get it from the 4th day you’re sick, so first 3 are unpaid.

Catlover77 · 22/11/2023 21:34

The first 3 days are unpaid

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/11/2023 21:35

That’s the standard policy for SSP.

Some companies pay the first 3 days, lots don't

Hippywannabe · 22/11/2023 21:35

Yes, hubby works for a major supermarket ànd they do this.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/11/2023 21:35

Yes, that's standard if you just get SSP.

Stroggle · 22/11/2023 21:35

Oh that’s atrocious. Let’s hope I don’t get ill

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 22/11/2023 21:35

Yep. Totally legal and not Mickey Mouse.

Hellocatshome · 22/11/2023 21:36

Thats how SSP works it is the minimum they have to do. You must have worked places where they gave you a better sick pay package than the legal minimum.

Yeah in the first 6 months it’s ssp. Fucking wonderful. They should put this stuff on the job advert

Seems fair enough tbh

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 22/11/2023 21:37

@Stroggle and now you know why a lot of people go to work, when really they should be at home resting and getting better, instead of at work making everyone else sick too.

So after your probation it gets better, stops piss takers

Evidently, no one plans to get sick but sometimes it happens. I even worked in a very bare bones place, legal minimum in pensions, Mat pay etc but even they paid the 3 days. I’m genuinely stunned

Always assume its legal minimum unless they advertised enhanced sick pay. Same as annual leave, companies will usually highlight if they offer more

icelollycraving · 22/11/2023 21:40

Standard in most places I have worked.

I disagree, no one plans to get sick but sometimes it happens. I only had 2 sick days in the last year both back to back (tummy bug) but I’d have felt worried sick if I knew my wages would be docked

I’ve never seen mat pay or sick pay highlighted, definitely annual leave and pension, interesting I don’t get the minimum but that increases with service too.

i worked in a place that from the get go paid 4 weeks whilst in probation and that increased too but never was in job description

TeaKitten · 22/11/2023 21:43

I’ve never worked anywhere that HAS paid the first 3 days of sickness. I didn’t realise it was so common to to be honest.

OddityOddityOdd · 22/11/2023 21:45

I'd you're on SSP you should read the rules that apply to it. It's a long time since I knew it in detail but there were rules around linked periods of sickness if subsequent absences were within so many days/weeks apart etc. It won't be paid at your normal rate of pay either. I don't know the current figure but it's pretty low I think. Check it all out. This is why people go to work when they should be off sick.

KThnxBye · 22/11/2023 21:46

I’ve never been paid for a day I didn’t go to work, not even SSP.

Dogcatmousebunny · 22/11/2023 21:47

I have a close friend in the UK with stage 4 bowel cancer . She is very ill ,worked for the company for over 30 years …she only gets SSP ..bloody shocking and immoral!

LIZS · 22/11/2023 21:48

Normal even beyond probation in many companies.

Are you usually that short sighted? How can it possibly create a productive workforce to have terms like this in a contract

Has she sought advice about getting a compromise agreement with her employer that lets her leave employment without quitting or being fired. It leaves the door open to apply for benefits you couldn't receive if you quit or were fired.
