Hi all
I'm currently a learning support one-to-one for a child with complex special needs including physical and mental limitations.
I have just started my job and I have no previous experience in a similar role, however I started my teacher training undergraduate degree this year. I am 4 years away from being a qualified teacher.
From this job description, what would you think is expected of me planning wise as an unqualified learning support assistant?
- Working with individuals or small groups of children under the direction of teaching staff
- Implement planned learning activities/teaching programmes as agreed with the teacher, adjusting activities according to pupils’ responses as appropriate
I was under the impression that I would be delivering pre-planned activities to this student but instead I have just been left to do it all myself. I have have little support and have been dumped with stacks of paperwork and loads targets for her to meet. I am now expected to sort through and plan an entire curriculum, assign homework, create resources and activities for the student every day. I also have to adjust them heavily to meet her physical limitations. I am also expected to manage communications with the parents and attend therapy sessions to observe and replicate it in school. I have no experience and feel completely unqualified for this level of planning and responsibility and I'm finding it really difficult to manage and make sense of. My mum thinks the school are taking advantage of me by getting me to do all of this.
If you think that I am being expected to do too much, how should I approach this with the school?
Would love some insight on what a one-to-one should actually do?
