Has anyone watched May December? If so, what were your thoughts on it? I’ve just seen it and I have such mixed emotions, I’m not really sure how I feel!

I was going to start a thread, I feel the same as you, when it finished I thought is that it! But the more I’ve pondered on it, the more I think I did like it, I’ve got a lot of questions and it was very uncomfortable viewing.

EachandEveryone · 11/12/2023 21:05

I could hardly hear what they were saying was it a true story? I didn’t understand the end at all!

Myfanwyprice · 12/12/2023 07:39

I think I read that it was based on a story that happened in America of a teacher who married a student she began a ‘relationship’ with when he was in sixth form.

That ending was strange, I was thinking surely that can’t be it!

I thought this was going to be about May to December the 80's/90's sitcom which I loved.

It’s based on a real story! It’s about Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau. There’s actually an interview of them on YT and Mark Kay keeps saying to him, ‘well who was the boss, who was the boss’ when the interviewer asked why she’d sexually engage with a 14 year old.

The film does a really good job at reflecting reality, I found it all rather creepy. The ending was just meh

Can you beleive it’s being classed as a comedy?

CeeChynaa · 12/12/2023 13:36

Really?! @EachandEveryone I remember seeing it was a romance/drama or something like that

OP posts:

I feel that the title is too flippant - suggesting a romance when it’s so far removed from that, Joe was abused as a teenager and now controlled as an adult.

It was interesting to see his realisation that he wasn’t able to consent.

My overall feeling was that there could’ve been more, I wanted to know more about Gracie’s outbursts and the fixation on her daughters weight, as well as more background.

I did think it was interesting how Elizabeth’s character morphed.

EachandEveryone · 12/12/2023 14:01

Yes the Golden Globes have it in the comedy section and the original review in the guardian thought it was hysterical!!

PrimalOwl10 · 12/12/2023 14:01

I think the ending was clear when Joe realised he was groomed and he was the victim here. Watching his children graduate gave him the clarity to realise he didn't have a proper childhood with proper experinces, whilst he adored his kids he ended up being a father whilst he was still a child and didn't have the capacity to actually be a parent. He wanted better for his kids.

I think it was evident the relationship with him and grace was over.

EachandEveryone · 12/12/2023 14:16

The other thing I didn’t get was how were they so wealthy? Three kids in college in the Stated and a huge house with a pool they didn’t seem short of anything.

Definitely! When she was just selling cakes to a few customers who felt sorry for her!

NoWayRose · 14/12/2023 19:38

Yes I was wondering about the huge estate … I assumed they must have been selling their story (if it’s legal to profit from crime like that in US). They must have gained financially from things like helping with the daytime TV movie that Natalie Portman’s making?

I thought the ending was so sad. He’s focused on raising those Monarchs safely in to adulthood in a way he wasn’t. The same way he’s raised his own kids safely to graduation. The real life man this is based on did leave in the end so I’m hoping that’s what Joe does

H34th · 25/12/2023 00:57

I watched it a few days ago and still think about it occasionally.

A bit confused by Elizabeth's character. What was she aiming for at the end - did she 'get' Gracie or was she feeling threatened by her ('insecure people are dangerous') and trying to play it a certain way.

I imagine the house and everything was paid for by Joe. He is a doctor or similar?
So she supported him through his education,as they had a baby when he was 13...

6th grade, not 6th form. My 12 year old dd is in 6th grade. I think the real life child was that age when they started a relationship. Disgusting
