Putting cutlery away has recently begun to drive me mad

I feel like I must be being unreasonable because I never had a problem before. I am being driven mad one fork at a time

I think it started when the dishwasher broke. My draining board is basic, there is no rack or anything, and I haven't bought one because I want to buy a new dishwasher when funds float into my lap (could be a long wait).

So anyway the forks and knives are just lying on the drainer and then I transfer them to the drawer, two feet away. And then it's another bloody meal time and they get dirty again. They are in there for about as long as I leave my car on the double yellow lines.

Is there some kind of on-table solution tik tok sensation that they have in America that I've missed out on?

I feel rather the same about hand washing because I do that at least ten times a day as well.

Perhaps if I dip my hands in pva I can just peel off a layer each time instead.

I think I am alone in my angst. I can find no reference to it online.

Sharp knives, put away. Cooking utensils in a jar. Teaspoons in a drawer. Everything else in this. Forks, knives spoons mixed together.

Was coming on to recommend these - from ikea, on the draining board. Wet (rinsed) cutlery goes straight in and stays there till needed.

The one we have is too big for teaspoons so they live in a terracotta flower pot, also on the draining board..Sorting only happens when you are setting the table.

I stopped separating the damn things into their own little compartments, this one for big spoons, little spoons, big forks, augh! I throw them all in the drawer. It has alleviated much silverware annoyance.

OP, I have no help to offer, but just wanted to say I love your writing style. You have a lovely (hilarious) turn of phrase.

DD's one household job is loading/unloading the dishwasher.

The other day she sighed dramatically and said 'it's endless!'

Welcome to adulthood darling 😂

If you are able to I would buy a second hand dishwasher. It will be £50 well spent.

We got our dishwasher for like 20 quid on gumtree...it's still with us 8 years on and we've only had to replace a couple of the clips that hold the top basket on the runners.

That's a nice thing to say. I am an unpublished (read: unsuccessful) writer, so not everyone agrees with you 🤣

Am exactly the same with the washing. Once it's dry it sits in a basket in the bedroom for days before I can be arsed to put it all away.

I've got something like this on the draining board so the cutlery can be divided up. I never end up putting it in the drawer it just gets reused from there

Get a nice fancy wooden box with several sections: condiments, napkins, cutlery....

Then pretend you are in a gastro pub for every meal.

And being critiqued by Marcus Wareing.

On a bad day, Gregg Wallace.

Americans don’t eat everything with their hands. We use cutlery is a slightly different manner, but don’t eat mashed potatoes or casserole with our fingers. Gen Z are much worse about this, of course.

I get the repetition fatigue with getting ready. Same fucking thing every day for twenty odd years. Same thoughts, same face, only now with increasingly depressing variations - check/pluck the chin as well as the eyebrows etc. Wish I could somehow freeze it all in place and just do it periodically, like cutting the grass 🤣
