Am I reading this right? School uniform

My DD is going to be starting her secondary school next week, so I'm looking at sorting uniform. (She's starting late as had to go through an appeal.)

Having been used to being able to get her uniform from Asda, it's all really expensive! There's no where in our city you can buy the uniform, you have to go to another town to get it adding to the expense!

Now to my AIBU. On the school website it says 'Navy jumper with badge to provide protective clothing for Art lessons

YANBU the school expects you to buy a £20 jumper to be ruined in Art classes
YABU it must be a typo, they will wear aprons in Art

£20 for a school jumper is expensive. Especially compared to what cab get in a supermarket.

Hadn’t the government stopped schools branding uniforms unnecessarily?

Why is preferring quality privilege? It’s a reasonable aspiration. I hate spending hard earned money on tat. Plenty of parents would prefer better quality uniforms. Or at least the choice to have them. Many don’t want Dc sitting around in stinky polyester all day. I get some do find them expensive but then happily pay £100 for trainers. There’s loads of pre owned and charities that help out.

It’s privilege because you actually have a choice. Having been a teacher, there were families who really didn’t have this option no matter how much they didn’t want “stinky polyester”. These are not the families buying £100 trainers but the families with barely enough to get by.

Of course you are assuming that art is messy! Might not be. Plus you appealed for this school so surely you should suppport its ethos?

No uniform is great if parents can afford the fashions. It costs a lot more if Dc is eying up the clothes modelled by others!

I hope Art is messy! It is a specialist Art school so hoping it will be properly hands on.

What ethos have I said I'm not supporting? I'm not sure ruining expensive jumpers is an ethos? 😂

No state school uniform is eye watering. Try looking at the cost of a private school uniform to understand eye watering!! State school uniforms are frequently cheap horrible fabrics and pretty nasty. I’d rather pay more for quality.

Surely eye watering is in the eye of the beholder. Having to spend hundreds of pounds on uniform is not easy for everyone to afford.

2 pairs of trousers £40
4 blouses £50
2 jumpers £40
Shoes £70
2 P.E leggings £40
2 polo shirts £30
P.E hoodie £20

That's £290 and then there's all the equipment they need.

Agree op.

i remember going to an open day for a selective school and the branded socks were £10/ pair! Put me off.

Wow 😮 At least I could DD's socks from Primark!

She went to state school in the end with Asda socks!

School uniform costs can be prohibitive for some families.

Passepartoute · 22/11/2023 17:02

The school is going directly against DfE guidance about the cost of uniforms. To be honest, I wouldn't be too keen on getting my child into a school that can't obey the law.

Poppins2016 · 22/11/2023 09:20

I'd contact the school and ask if it's a typo...

More likely to be "navy apron/overall with badge"!

This. My DC had to have an apron with logo on.

closingdownsale · 22/11/2023 17:15

Pretty sure it's a typo/missing word. I would check before buying anything.

Well, she'd have to be home educated then. Our catchment, requires improvement school charges the same prices but you also have to buy a blazer and tie. Even if any other school wasn't oversubscribed or was what we wanted they all have branded items and most a blazer and tie too.

So I think this school is probably the nearest to DfE guidance in terms of fewer branded items!

Why would they need an apron with a logo on?

i can understand for PE kits but not art.

Surely you mean town?
I can't believe you live in a "city" and have to travel to another city to get uniform....unless we are talking Manchester and Salford and its just across the river so not even worth mentioning

Not all cities are large! Look at St Davids in Wales, or Wells in Somerset. Tiny cities that are smaller than most towns.

Whether someone regards a uniform cost eyewatering is clearly very relative to their financial position. Someone with very limited financial means may find the cost of a state school uniform eye watering whilst someone who is far wealthier than you may find the cost of a private school uniform negligible. Horses for courses really.

The thing is, nobody wants to spend their hard earned money on cheap, horrible, nasty fabrics. Everyone would choose to spend more on quality if they had the option.

"No state school uniform is eye watering" is a ridiculous, snotty statement. Surely you can imagine people for whom a couple hundred pounds is eye watering.

Puppydog23 · 23/11/2023 16:30

I agree with pp, I think they meant to list the jumper, then say to provide an apron or similar to cover it, and in editing they accidentally mashed them together. Definitely check with the school.
