Got myself in an anxious state about radiators!

AlltheJays23 · 22/11/2023 00:32

Am I being completely unreasonable and dramatic. My heating and boiler has been off for a good four or five hours now. The radiator in my bedroom is making a right racket! Its crackling and creaking. Almost sounds like running water but coming from inside the wall or the radiator but I think it's from the radiator. I've looked but can't see anything. Just the sound. I have OCD and I am melting down in case it's about to explode or there's a gas leak or my house is about to fall down. Jesus Christ. I'm about to get my child and go and leave this house. I am well and truly freaked out. Please someone help. I know this sounds silly and I'm a grown ass women but my brain clearly ain't right.

I don't think it's physically possible for radiators to explode.

The system probably needs bleeding.

A gas leak wouldn't make the radiator noisy and you would notice the smell!

Ankerdam · 22/11/2023 00:35

That's a perfect description of what the heating coming on after the system is cool sounds like in every house I've ever lived in.

SM4713 · 22/11/2023 00:36

Don't you have a carbon monoxide meter if you have gas?
The sounds are likely to be air in the system that needs bleeding.
Its your anxiety that is fueling your thoughts.

Dartmoorcheffy · 22/11/2023 00:38

It's simply just airlocks in your radiators absolutely normal and nothing to worry about at all.

Limmers14 · 22/11/2023 00:40

We had this last year and it can be so loud!! There’s air in your system. You can bleed the radiators yourself which might solve it or you’ll need a plumber

Loubelle70 · 22/11/2023 00:41

Radiator key... bleed your radiators

AlltheJays23 · 22/11/2023 00:42

Can it still be air even though my heatings been switched off at the boiler for like five hours? They are completely cold..

Tittyfilarious81 · 22/11/2023 00:43

Don't worry op my radiator does this as it cools down and I can hear the water sound at random times too and I've lived here over 20 years

AlltheJays23 · 22/11/2023 00:44

Yes we have a carbon monoxide alarm but only in the room where the boiler is it's a room sealed appliance. I was thinking along the lines of a gas leak from inside the walls or something
Jesus Christ I'm clearly very unwell 🤣

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 22/11/2023 00:45

Sounds like there's air in the pipes. Have you bled the radiators recently?

AlltheJays23 · 22/11/2023 00:46

Admittedly we've lived here for nearly two years and I've never bled the radiators. I didn't think we needed to because it's combi gas boiler central heating. Or am I thick

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 22/11/2023 00:48

I have a combi gas boiler. It was serviced today. Whilst he was here he bled the radiators, because they were starting to get noisy. If they haven't been bled for at least 2 years, that's probably the problem.

Tittyfilarious81 · 22/11/2023 00:49

@AlltheJays23 you do still need to bleed air from radiators even with a combi boiler , when there's air in ours they pop, bang and sound like gushing water .

But should they still make noise even tho my heating has been off for five hours and the radiators are completely cold? Like stone cold

You keep on finding things to be dramatic about - you know this is not healthy so focus on basics and stopping the 'yeah but what about...' might help

Where would this gas inside the walls even be coming from? The gas goes to the boiler, and is burned. It isn’t in the radiators. it’s just normal water inside them, and in all the pipes.

It sounds like sir in the system to me. The radiators are cold but is the heating on atm?
they might be cold exactly because of the air.

No the heating isn't on and hadn't been on for like five hours

Edited

I was thinking more along the lines of the gas supply where it comes into the property like in the walls?

No.

If gas is leaking, you won't hear it. You'll smell it.

Gas pipes aren't really buried "in the walls" anyway for obvious reasons. They're under floor boards or boxed in, so you can get to them. They're not plastered inside the walls like wiring can be.

Chill out. Just bleed the radiators. See if that makes a difference. It probably will.

It’s definitely NOT a gas leak. The main cause is probably air in the rads. Absolutely nothing to get upset about, it’s a natural thing, the rads just might need a a bleed, total job about 15 minutes

It definitely is genuine. I've been to to the doctor's actually and if you had read some of my posts you would have read that I'm in treatment for my OCD. I do post a lot mumsnet. I've recently joined. I suffered with anxiety and post natal depression and anxiety also. I don't actually have any friends and I don't have a very supportive partner. i guess It just my way of looking for advice and some kind of reassurance/support. Most people have been really kind and helpful. But with people like you who are judgemental and rude and your comment has actually made me feel very ashamed. I'll not bother again so thanks for that. One place I felt someone/#anyine would understand and you've taken that away from me. Thank you very much.
